After finishing on a Thuri I will use a small homemede paddle with Chrome ox, about a half dozen laps and then a very thorough stropping,

Thanked: 267I finish from 1K up using Nagura and finally a very fine Asagi. My last step is 10 laps on hard felt using Carbon Boron Nitrate 0.125 micron. The edges that I get are the smoothest and keenest that I have ever used!
I voted mostly stones because CBN in not a paste. I hate diamond or any other kind of paste!
Take Care,
Richard

I have experimented with diamond paste, spray and with chrom-ox and gotten good results with what little I've used them. I went on a mission to get to the point where I could get really good edges off of the finishing stone alone and I got there. Once there I found that even though the pastes may offer more improvement I am happy with the edges I get off of the stones and an unpasted strop of linen/leather.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2209It really depends upon what new toys I have to play with. Currently I will be trying the 1.0 micron Boron carbide and the 0.125 CBN on leather paddle strops. I like variety!

I get edges I'm happy with from my La Veinette coti most of the time, occasionally do some laps on the Naniwa 12k or other cotis.
For quickness sometimes or if I have some stuborn steel I will finish on TI rasoir paste on a tight strop. This paste always gives a delightfully smooth edge quite similar to that of a coticule.

Thanked: 335Rocks rock?
Then finishing the work of a fine rock with a pasted paddle would be like putting ketchup on spaghetti slathered with a carefully crafted red sauce? Maybe so.
And the gentlemanly debate continues. And we grasshoppers hang on every word of the meisters.
Whatever, I definitely need to buy more stuff.

Thanked: 23never used paste until recently i thought i would try cerium more with the thought for when i'm too lazy to retouch on my arkansas and i found it harsh compared to the stone whether a touch up or finishing, then i thought i'd try .3 chromium and .1 iron for the same purposes but the chromium feels harsher compared to the stone and even just a few laps followed by the iron is still harsh, now i'm testing just the iron by itself to see what that's like after the stone and for touch ups

Thanked: 317I'm really surprised. I've only recently come back from a year, year and a half being too distracted with other forums and hobbies; but when I left, EVERYBODY was talking about pastes.
Pastes were where it was at.
Now they seem to have gone somewhat out of fashion.
