He was assuming you lap your stone before each use, since many people do because an edge over 8k can be lost with even slight dishing.

How often do you lap your stones? Would you go through that whole progression again when you relapped?

Anyone go to a finer stone to relap(lap on a 325, then use a 600 or 1200 between uses)?

Thanks Justin, that was exactly my point.

I always lap after use. I like my stones perfectly flat. I don't know if this is the rule of thumb here, but I wanted to know if anyone laps with only a DMT 325 or goes further up the grit scale everytime.

Honestly if the stone is remotely hard, and you already lapped it past 325 I dont see a reason why you couldt do you your subsequent maintenance lapping with a finger grit to avoid taking off too much material.

BTW: my stone is still on the way so I dont know if it is very hard, or if it would dish out fast

Gotta test shave: Not good The razor was just as sharp the others, but quite harsh and I got some burn.
I'm starting to think this razor maybe don't go well with the LM?

I'll try it with a light slurry intead of clear water and see if that helps.
Need help or tutoring? Check out the  .

From reading everyones experiments from the past few weeks past few days experiments it seems like finishing on water might not be the way to go, I think I'll try sewing machine oil or glycerine when I get mine.

Has anyone tried a few swipes on chromium oxide to dull down the harshness? If no one has I might try that first just since no one has

Well I have a DT from inigo jones and you do get a crisper edge with oil. Llyn Melynllyn meas yellow lake in Welsh in other words assuming the source is as stated these are Yellow Lake Oilstones, so one would expect them to do better with oil.

So how do people compare the unknown hone out of his Triple set with the other 2?

The third hone seems finer than the LM, but I haven't done much honing on it to really test it yet.

I feel that if I do leather only, then I can feel the stone's edge a bit more. I find the webbing/fabric pretty aggressive in smoothing it out. If I can strop on leather only and get a really nice shave, then linen/leather is only going to make it better.

As an aside...I've done some slurry testing, water testing and oil testing.

Here's an update on my findings:

On water, 50 strokes is way too many to finish. There's a harshness that I've found that is not to my liking. I'm thinking that between 15-30 on water is plenty depending on your steel.

Slurry: I feel that a very light slurry works, but anything thicker is not to the stone's benefit. So far i've found that a light slurry with 10 strokes, and then another 15-20 on plain water works nicely.

Oil: I've only tested two edges off the oil. I did a regular honing through the Norton 4/8, a couple strokes on a Naniwa 12k, and then 10 strokes on water, followed by 20 on oil. I've enjoyed this edge very much, so now I'll try and vary it up a bit in terms of stroke count.

Really though...I'm just having loads of fun testing it out. I've got a little chalkboard on my backsplash in the shop, and it's filled with numbers and squigglies.... It kind of looks like a bunch of math equations!

As soon as I get the flip side lapped, I'm trying this.
