As it stands I have found it fine to go straight from a King 6000 to a Chinese 12K (PHIG) with no slurry so it should be fine to follow his method, although I can't comment on his findings. However I've had a DT from Inigo Jones for some time and his experiences don't tally with mine but then not all stones are created equal.
I have been tempted to buy either a LM or the unknown one but I'm resisting!Regards
Nic

Thanked: 433A big +1 to Lynn's "One Stone Method" from above.
I took one straight from my "just bought" pile, a non sharp 1/4 hollow Sheffield and set a bevel with an 850 diamond plate then straight to Lynn's method, followed it as close as possible (325 diamond instead of generic slurry stone for the heavy and medium slurry and supplied slurry stone for the light) then did 20 laps CrOx and 40 linen / 70 leather. It was popping arm hairs at the tips. Shave tested fine!!!
I'm actually very surprised this worked this well without any intermediate stones, next time I will try this after a Norton 4k

Thanked: 993I read Sham's post this morning before heading to work, and I was thinking about it all day. Didn't want to post without giving it some thought though.
And as above, my main question: Why go from a 6k to a finishing stone? I wouldn't test a Naniwa 12k or and Escher or Charnley this way. But that's just me. Now Sham has wayyyy more experience with stones and honing than I do, so there must be something to his theory.
However, I've honed about 20 on the LM so far, and as for finishing, I really enjoy it. I'm having a lot of fun with mine.

Wow... "one stone to rule them all"
Well, I'm impressed. I'll follow Lynn's experience. My next honing session, a set of Filarmonicas, I'll set the bevel in my Naniwa 1K, as always, and then, off to LM with a REALLY heavy slurry and some pressure and proceed with his instructions.
It will be fun to see what happens.

Took me all morning to read this thread (sometimes that whole work thing really cramps my style). Actually stumbled on to it from this thread: http://straightrazorpalace.com/hones...huringian.html. That thread was enough to get me to buy the 3 stone set. Tried em out last night but i haven't got the chance to test shave yet. Pretty new to the honing scene, less than a year, so my results are probably not a great indicator. One of my razors I put through a N4K/DT pyramid, then finished on the purple. The other I went from the N8K to the black slate. No valid reason for either of those methods, just took a stab. We'll see how I did tomorrow. So far I really like the feel of all the stones, very interested in trying them with oil. Someone mentioned lapping both sides, one for oil, one for water. That idea appeals to me so I think I'll give it a go later.
Great thread folks, hone on!
