Thanked: 458That's guaranteed to start a war! I've only had one that would bright polish a razor like the more common super finishers. I sold it like a dummy on here not too long ago....not because it wasn't great, but because I have other super finishers.
One of the dumbest things one can do, though, is buy a gigantic stone that is expensive because of rarity in size and then find a cheap stone that's 5 inches long that does a better job finishing.

Thanked: 169I got in touch with them at ardennes a few weeks ago about huge cotis and relative value and this was the reply
"350 x 87mm is a very large stone! we are not able to produce them anymore, you can only find them second hand. When (hopefully) in the future our mine is back up and running we will be able to make them. A selected quality 250 x 60mm is sold for 338 euro, a standard 260 euro. If we can produce a 350 x 90mm, we would double the price. "
So basically, if they could make you one, it would be ~$700usd... Then factor in a bbw backing of same dimensions if you want that. Now factor in the fact that you can't order it... It probably is a $1000 stone BUT cotis are a case of huge diminishing returns once you go up in size given ballooning costs. 5x2.5" is perfect in my opinion...

This was a couple days ago. My question is at the bottom. His reply at the top. I was legitimately curious. I don't know much about natural stones unless I read it on SRP.
"Size / Quality / Age / all natural no man made contents. I've been honing for well known people with this stone for 55 years. Stone looks new. Thx for your interest. U might want to look for a smaller stone. But get a old NATURAL one."

Thanked: 1587I only have 3 words for anyone thinking of buying an expensive stone: Full refund Policy.
I'm not going to get into an argument over whether Coticules are or are not worth that kind of money. God knows I've dropped a bundle on Jnats, so I'm in no position to judge what others are prepared to pay for stones.
What I will say, however, is that for the amount of money that is being asked the seller needs to allow the potential buyer to try the stone and return it no questions asked if they are not happy with it. If that's not part of the deal I wouldn't touch it.

Thanked: 169Well, that is not the policy on there... The seller is only obligated to deliver exactly what he states he is delivering. Now if a seller said a stone were 15k and it was more like 8 or if a stone were blazing fast in the description and it was slow as hell, those are very real problems and not as advertised. If someone for example put a stamped escher on there described it exactly and delivered it @ say, $700 to the new buyer it is way off base for a buyer to be contacting them saying "This stone is not so much above my hone XXX so I want my money back, refund me and I will send the hone back." That is off base as can be and if you forwarded that to ebay as a seller, it is one instance where a seller would actually win a claim. Now, if someone were local in this instance, since he wants local pickup anyway, one thing I don't think would be off base is requesting to test the hone since it wouldn't impart any wear on it anyway and coticules are notoriously inconsistent in how they behave. But that would also go for those 5 digit jnats. If you are thinking of buying rocks like that, you should just spring for a plane ticket and test stuff first. The earlier point is crazy though as it would be abused every which way. Every time someone took a rock gamble on the bay and failed they would be trying to screw sellers over who don't even make any grandiose claims and rarely give much beyond dimensions most of the time... A lot of this is like any hobby, personal responsibility with funds and spending what you can afford to have locked up for a time if unhappy. I've bought nice rocks for $$$ that I found underwhelming... I sucked it up and just dealt with regaining the liquidity from it... I created the issue with my own actions after all..
