I'm Almost embarassed...
I know it's too late to ask, but I have to know...
Did I get shafted for $50 on this? (Item #360159235404)
I've been looking for a big Sheffield blade, and the edge on this one, while ugly, isn't TERRIBLE...Yeah, that's a big chip, and yeah, there's a lot of hone-wear, but it's a BIG wedge...and I want one.
So why didn't anyone else buy it? Too good to be true? I figured it was low because the guy didn't have any idea what he was talking about...But then, NEITHER DO I!!!!!

it's big, but it doesn't look like 1" big, more like 7/8 at most.
it'll be good when you clean it, but you'll loose the masonic etching if you want no pitting.

I would say don't touch that blade. leave it as is. it is price on is etching. if you take it out you will make mistake. this is just my thoughts.

I think you did alright. It's more than I would pay for the blade, but, then again, that's not a blade that really strikes my fancy. I'd say spending $50 on a keeper is totally reasonable.
Also, that's really not a lot of hone wear at all. I've had W&B's like that (same shape blade, same grind), and even I call them wedges - they are certainly a fuller grind than a quarter hollow.
With the etching, that's really up to you. Personally, I would leave it as is because I don't like cleaning blades at all. Also tough to say what sort of shape the scales are in because they are so under exposed, but that could be some nice horn.

Oh-oh with symbols like that that blade belonged to the devil himself. Send it to me for immediate disposal. I'll take on the devil for you.

Thanked: 235It certainly is nice. I wouldn't have paid that much. But I have a personal rule; never pay more than $30usd for a razor.
Of course I'm not very good at following the rules.

I have a similar W&B and it may not be that pretty but it sure can shave. With the symbols on it I'd say it is a good candidate for the vibrating tumbler treatment. It should turn out shiny with the symbols in tact.

$50 is a fine price for a big razor, if it cleans up well.
Personally, I'd consider sending it straight to Philadelph or Max for regrinding, and t'hell with the etching.
I got me a big ol' Greaves wedge of the 'bay not too long ago, and did just that... Philadelph is still working on it, but in the end I'll have a big razor that's PRETTY as well as big.
My two cents.
