C'mon people, calm down (yet another Filly post)
So I had assumed, with all of the recent posts about the insane prices of Filly razors on eBay, that maybe we were succeeding in "talking down" the price of these razors. I mean, isn't it perfectly obvious that the sellers here have an entire warehouse or some other large quantity of these razors to sell? Every single week, week in and week out, there is a brand new Filly #13 and Filly #14 EPBD available for sale. The only thing different about each one is the color of the scales!
So here's another week and another EPBD for sale: STRAIGHT RAZOR FILARMONICA BARBAS DURAS #14 RED BOX NOS - eBay (item 150416352572 end time Feb-23-10 09:46:00 PST)
Current auction price? $518 !!! To paraphrase Popeye Doyle, these guys are bidding like the Russians are in New Jersey!
Anyway, I'm sure the razor is "worth" whatever someone will pay for it, and it's great news for the seller of course, but seriously, THERE WILL BE ANOTHER ONE FOR SALE NEXT WEEK, AND THE WEEK AFTER THAT, AND THE WEEK AFTER THAT. So you can forget about the dot.com stocks and the real estate market, because we've officially entered the Filly razor market bubble!
(Also, this is a really nice looking razor in red. OOPS, ignore that! I didn't say that!)

Thanked: 1903It doesn't really matter, you know. Somewhere out there, there will always be someone with more money than sense. And, as I said before, that's perfectly fine by me. If you honestly believe that buying a razor someone else thinks is the bee's knees will turn you into an experienced shaver, so be it. Heaven forbid that more Chroniks are found, though.
On a completely personal note, if you compare the going rate of these things with the prices for Wacker or, even worse, Revisor razors, you just might find yourself wondering if buying a Filarmonica is really such a clever idea. Not to mention mass produced razors like TI or Dovo.
Ah well, to each their own...

But the question everyone wants to know is :
"If or when will the bubble burst?"
I'm not sure if this is a bubble, since people paying 500 USD for a EPBD Filly will not believe he can sell it for 1000 USD and so on.
Supply and demand? Maybe, but if we have a significant supply of NOS Fillies every week, then the demand is huge.

Yes, the EPBD's get great reviews, and I know that Max S. swears they are the best blades ever, but I wonder whether the same might be said about lots and lots of other blades that do not get the same hype. For instance (and not to pump one brand over another except that it happens to be one that I've used personally), the Gotta 120s that I have used are all fantastic, amazing razors. Sharp as hell, nice balance, easy to strop and maintain, and cut through whiskers like [insert your favorite simile here]. But you don't see any reviews of these Gottas here, so the price stays reasonable. Is a Gotta 8/8 comparable to a Filly EPBD? Who knows?! I don't know anyone who has both razors, and until then no one can say.
I think your comment is correct about demand far, far outstripping supply for now, so maybe it is not so much of a "bubble" but more like a fad item. My guess is that a lot of people buying them now are newer SR shavers, which means that at least some of them may be offered for sale in "lightly used" condition in a few months when those buyers decide that maybe SR shaving is not for them. That's when I'm going to buy one!
Anyway, thanks for the insights and good comments!

As said before, I consider them to be amongst the best but that was when they were available around the $200.00 - $300.00 tops. With the recent spike all bets are off. So far I noticed that the EPBD and Taurino are going for absurd prices indeed. But it's worth as much as the buyer wants to spend so we can debate this forever.
