If you want to say this link here run your cursor over the 'here' to blue it out. Just above the text box in 'reply to post' there is a tool bar with two green orbs resembling the earth. The one on the left.... click on it and a box opens up. Paste your link in there. It will display with a hyperlink under 'here'.

Jimmy, you may have the answer. So, the two bidders could be knowledgeable Pike razor hone collectors who know exactly what they are getting and it's worth (to them), or they could be newbies hoping to score a $500 hone to resell on eBay for twice what they paid for it. I just did a completed listing search for Pike hones, and saw 3 recent ones, none of which sold for over $30.

Glen, I have never heard of anybody assigning a grit number to THE Norton hone, but it would have to be a fast cutter to sharpen an axe, no?

Glen, did you mean this one or the Norton? IIRC, Sham has used the Norton one, and he agrees that in is a fantastic super amazing (not his words) hone. This Pike - I have no idea.

On axes there is the edge and then there is all that steel leading up
to the edge that needs a polish. When I was tinkering with an ax as
a teenager a deep clean cut demanded both a sharp edge (easy)
and a polished bevel that did not grab and hold the edge back (harder).

I never had the precision that the pro guys have but a sharp ax
makes short work of a big old tree. Then I discovered power tools....

I would love to know what the bidders see in this hone....

Weird. I just won this one for $34 a couple weeks ago without much fight...

Looks the same to me, no?

Mine's not all chipped up, either.

Anybody wanna buy it? $200 would go a long way towards the Shapton(s) I want...

eBay is a crazy, crazy place. All for a good shave...

It looks the same to me, different box but the indentation where the logo is on the stone looks the same. Norton bought Pike so it very well may be the identical hone. Here is the seller's ebay photo for comparison.

I just picked one of these today for $5 at an antique store (green Norton box, pike on the hone).

It lapped pretty well (fast) and both sides seem rough and fairly coarse, any idea as to the grit rating?

Try it (on a non-shave ready razor or a pocket knife if you know how to sharpen them) and see what it does. IMO, the best way to learn about hones is to try them.
