Can't Get No Respect,
Here is the deal, I have been a buyer and seller on ebay since '99. I have 1379 positive feedbacks showing up front. In the early days repeat buyers or seller's feedback didn't show up front so my total is really much more. I've left 1,541 feedbacks for others. I've received 1,456. Then there are transactions where neither party left feedback. No telling how many of those.
Point is there are almost 100 people who I've left positive feedback for who did not reciprocate. This got my goat and I decided that I would not leave feedback for anyone until I first received it from them. Then ebay changed their feedback policy a couple of years ago. They now have a policy where the buyer can leave positive, neutral, or negative feedback but the seller can only leave positive feedback or none at all.
Now I've got 100% feedback in both roles. If I was dead set against leaving feedback first before I'm adamant about it now. I'll be damned if I'm going to leave a positive and then have some jerk leave me a negative as a follow up. Now that ebay changed the rules the feedback system is meaningless anyhow AFAIC.
If you've gotten this far, what do you think ? Leave feedback first or wait until you receive it ? Does it depend on whether you are a buyer or seller ? Inquiring minds want to know.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I've been buying / selling for almost as long (2000), and agree with you completely. I went through the same feedback quandries. When I sold an item, I always left feedback as soon as the person paid. Their portion of the transaction was complete, now it was up to me to deliver the goods, so to speak. I became disenchanted when I got my first negative feedback (after 800+ transactions) when a parcel got lost in the mail. Instead of contacting me about it, the person went to PayPal and demanded a refund saying I never shipped it. If he would have contacted me, we could have worked something out. Turns out a few days later I received the parcel back, damaged. The damage completely obscured the delivery address, so it was bounced back to me. I was going to repackage the item and send it even though I told PayPal to refund his money, but after he left me negative feedback, I said screw it and just gave up on eBay. I even canceled my PayPal account (don't even get me started on that).
This happened before eBay changed their feedback system, so I'm not very familiar with how it works, but from what I've read, it does sound meaningless.
I did purchase a Boker from a gentleman a few weeks ago, and he restored my faith in eBay users....

To be honest I am a bit slow on feedback... I usually do them in a batch once a month. However, even if the other party has not left feedback yet, I still leave it. It is a bit odd that eBay took away the ability to leave proper feedback as a seller.

Thanked: 1371The buyer should always leave feedback first, it indicates that the transaction is completed to their satisfaction.
When I buy I leave feedback first.
When I sell I don't leave feedback until the buyer leaves feedback.
It's not to be petty, it's because that's the only way I know that our transaction is complete.

I've never sold anything on the bay but in Tue last year or so almost every seller I've bought from has stated that they will not leave feedback until I leave feedback first.

I am solely a buyer on ebay.
I leave feedback once the object has arrived.
Basically, my experience with ebay has been good.
I've had problems on just a couple of times, but the sellers has always been willing to resolve any situation that has arisen.
I will always contact the seller before leaving negative feedback.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 21I think as a seller feedback should be done based on the transaction. If the buyer paid quick and up front then that is what you leave feedback on. Not waiting to retalliate if you get bad feedback.
As a buyer Leave feedback when the item is recieved and inspected. If it is not recieved then buyers should contact the seller first. Feedback should be left when the other party fulfills their part not waiting to see how they rate you base it on how they did their job.
As a side note I ordered an item and got a bait and switch. Part of my order was correct, but they switched an expensive camera lens for a cheap one. They said on the invoice "lens upgrade" but it was a knockoff cheapie. When contacted they said it was an upgrade. So I left feedback accordingly saying wrong item sent seller won't correct. They responded to it saying "$2 cord replaced Customer now happy." Total crap!
I think neither party should see feedback till both have sent it. There should be no changing or responding to it unless done with consent from both parties through ebay.

Thanked: 993My experience with ebay has essentially been the same as Birnando's up top.
I am only a buyer. I wait until the product has arrived, it's been looked over, and in some cases tested. Then I base my feedback on my experiences. I have had pleasant experiences from ebay. I had one experience that needed to be rectified, and it was taken care of by the seller promptly.
But, I think you have to do what you have to do.
My opinion, in every aspect of life, is to treat people how I want to be treated. I'm going to be truthful, but I'm also not going to wait for a seller to give me a rating. I'm just going to do it, because that's how I roll.
