The other side of the coin is that time is money. Depending on how much money one's time is worth it may be beneficial to go the instant gratification route, or keep looking for a low price deal.
To me this question has always been a matter of personal choice/circumstance, and the only way to do it wrong is if you are spending beyond your means, or undervaluing your time.
