Jimmy, are those scales bakelite? Both razors here seem to have them, maybe the razors are newer than I think they are?

Some of the best things in life are free. Or darn near it .

I'm 99% sure that they are backelite. I have a Barber's Use Wostenholm, and a W&B Bow with bakelite with the blades looking like they come from an earlier period too and they are obviously original to the scales. I am so glad you asked me this question.

I had wondered myself. On the other two I mentioned the scales have some of that discoloration common to bakelite that is exposed to water or to light. These on this Rodgers are deep jet black and I never did any hot pin tests. So I just took an eye loupe and examined them in a strong light.

I found a name stamped in the scales that I had never seen before. Dr. Schaffer is stamped on both front and back scales with an actual stamp like would be used on a tang of a razor. Never saw this until tonight when I looked the scales over with the eye loupe. It doesn't really mean anything to me but was probably the name of the seller's grandfather.

They could also be hardened rubber - hard rubber handles hit the market decades before celluloid and bakelite and the like.

How do you get a monster like that under your nose?
Or do you just take the nose off too?

I tried a 'hail Mary' like that once - asked a seller for a (cheap) buy now - they agreed, but as they went to add one someone bid and the auction subsequently ended north of $500...

I was one of the bidders on that razor, and didn't understand why the seller cancelled bids. To sell it for only $75, they deserve to loose the extra cash for canceling bids. I hope whoever won this monster treats her right and makes her look and shave nicely.

Jimmy, when did this happen? Recently or several years ago before the vintage razors started to spike in price.
