Thanked: 1Bit by eBay seller
Got bit by eBay seller today. Bought old Sheffield wedge, the pics where sketchy, so I messages the seller to see if it was grinding marks that I was looking at on the blade. He responded back that it had no grinding marks, just where someone had used fine steel wool to rub off the surface rust. It was a near wedge so figured it was worth $25. Got it today and it had grinding marks all over it. Even dips in the side of the spine where it was ground unevenly.

Well...........that my friend is pretty much worthless. How are the scales. You may be able to save those and put them on the next ebay purchase. Im sorry you got burned, but some people will say or do anything for a buck. See if you can return to the vendor. There is an ongoing thread about ebay, and how to buy from the bay. I would suggest you browse that thread some before your next purchase. There is some real good information in there. Alot of moderator chat in that one as well, so you know its good information. Buying from ebay is always a crapshoot IMHO, but some people like to take the chance.

You should be protected by ebays buyer protection. That clearly isn't "as described" if he claimed there are no grinder marks.

Thanked: 1Any easy way to tell if the temper was compromised? Other than honing it and seeing how long it holds an edge?

I wouldnt even try hone that blade. From the pictures I see the spine has been completely ground down, and it looks like they ground some of the edge off. That would be alot of work to repair. You could get that blade reground, but I wouldnt bother. I would send that back like the other members said. You should be able too. Even if you wanted to try and hone that blade it looks like the spine has been ground unevenly. I dont want to tell you what to do, but from the pics posted it looks like a total loss unless it is reground, and even then I am not sure it would do by the way they ground the spine off. Just my opinion of course. There will always be blades for restore around the 25 dollar range. They may not be sheffields, but they will not be mangled like that one is. Good luck friend let us know what you are going to do.

$25 is $25. But there's also a certain amount of risk associated with eBay transactions or even those on this site for that matter. If you can get your money back, great. If not, take comfort in the fact that it wasn't more significant. Some vendors on eBay are there all the time with consistent quality. If you find a good one, create a saved search for his/her merchandise. Focusing your search could cause you to miss an opportunity but helps guarantee you a better experience. You can take more risk when the cost is $25 but might want less risk as the price rises.

Thanked: 56If he doesn't take it back, message me. That razor isn't worthless, it's not worth much to somebody without the correct tools and knowledge.
