Razor won't stay sharp
So I have a gold dollar razor and honed it up nice and sharp. I use that and stropp and it stays sharp. My dovo OTOH dulls after a few shaves. I ruled out my shaving/stropping technique because I don't have this problem with my other razor. I looked at the edge under magnification and don't see any chips or rust. So what gives? Any suggestions? I set the bevel myself on the gold dollar and the dovo was supposably set by someone else but I figured if it was sharp at one time them the bevel must be set or is this wrong?

What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Thanked: 634It sounds like you need to reset the bevel to me. What grit stones are you using?

Thanked: 1184Somethings up huh ? All it takes is one bad move on the strop to ruin your day. Is this just a one time deal or have you repeatedly touched it up and had it go bad ?
Also are the 2 razors the same grind ? I could think of a ton of things but need more to go on :<0)Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

They are the same grind and yeah it's been pretty much since I got the razor. One is 6/8 and the other 5/8. I can USUALLY get it (dovo)very sharp again but in a matter of two shaves it's pulling again. I have yet to touch up my gold dollar (I only got it a week ago though so only about 4 shaves but still "good to go")

Thanked: 177Thumbnail test will tell you if bevel is set. Drag it on top of thumbnail. It should feel like its digging into the nail, not just grabbing.

Set your own bevel on the Dovo. Your razor, show that edge who is boss! All your work/learning on the GD earned you the right. Dive in!
the
water
is
FINE!!!
(and remember, if it won't shave off the 8k, going forward is not the right choice. i now make me test everything off the 8k, then proceed if GTG)Last edited by WadePatton; 01-15-2014 at 01:34 AM.

Ha! Who would have ever thought a Chinese Gold Dollar would outperform a German Dovo? Not me lol!
I would even go out on a limb and say that if you figured out how to tame your Gold Dollar and like it, you are going to LOVE the Dovo when you get it working.
I could be wrong of course lol. But that's my experience anyway. Good luck! I say start with the bevel as well.David

Thanked: 20I am sure I will be chastised for this, but I have a love affair with my Gold Dollars. Not all of them but I have 3 that are good shavers and one that is my number 2 of all I own. I have a Dovo, that is an ok shaver and it took me a long time to figure out that with the Dovo is made of thinner metal then the Gold Dollar. Since it is thinner, you have to use a lot less pressure when on the stone as that it flexes more. I guess what I am saying is that the Gold Dollar is way more forgiving of my mistakes on the stones. I think this also holds true with my stropping. Just something to consider, I am sure others will have different opinions.
