Beginner's SR shopping list
Hey guys, I've been DE shaving since oct last year and took up the feather DX since last christmas. I think I'm ready for a real SR.
So I've got a few brushes, some soaps and creams, aftershaves, an alum block and steptic pen, shaving mug.
I've got my eye on an TI from invisibleedge, 11/16 le grelot form, it says "Extra-heavy grind" or "x-thick" can someone tell me what this means?
I'd prefer to buy everything else from a single website to save on shipping costs which will be SRD. I won't be buying any hones at this time. OK so far what I have on the list is as follows:
Modular paddle (includes 0.5 micron diamond spray)
Straight razor oil protectant
Straight razor oil applicator
World of straight razor DVD
Straight razor stand
Anything else I'm forgetting?

I don't think you're forgetting anything; it's all about personal preference with what you are referring to. As long as you have a straight razor, strop, brush, soap or cream and are planning to send it out to get professionally honed you will be fine.
I personally have been shaving with a straight for over 2 years and still use my Rup Razor strop and just run the razor on the crox side to touch it up when it starts pulling. But I am a bit simplistic in my approach.
This forum is a wealth of information and helpful people. With a nice razor professionally honed and a decent strop you anything that arises people will be more than glad to help you with.

Thanked: 3I don't think you are supposed to apply that diamond spray to your daily strop. But it looks like you have everything.

Thanked: 3225The TI le grelot is not a full hollow ground blade. Possibly something like a half or quarter hollow. Contact Invisibleedge for more info. The straight razor - Straight Razor Place Library scroll down for an illustration of grinds.

New strop ONLY needs a daily rubbing with the palm of your hand (natural oils) just before stropping. Or as you pass it by and give it a few laps with your palm. I'll rub my forehead to increase the oil level on my hand before I rub the strop. Bought conditioners are best when you want to rejuvenate a vintage strop.

All great information. I'm still really new and have been told to avoid adding anything to my strop but the oil on my hands.

Thanked: 3225Yes, a new strop in good condition should not need much to keep it going. Been using the palm rub before stropping and no problems. About once a year I saddle soap the strop, wipe up and let dry over night. The strop being a shell cordovan leather I then give it a light polish with pure carnauba wax. I would not wax my bridle leather strop though.
I keep the Neats Foot oil for restoring dried up horn scales and old stiff paper dry strops.

Due to shipping costs it may be worth ordering an extra smooth leather pad, that way IF one does get damaged you will have a spare, i think the extra cost would be far less than postage alone on a replacement pad.
