The first razor that I bought that was a decent razor I got brand new for around 50 bucks from knife center's website. It was a carbon steel dovo, part number g142. They might be sold out, but they also have others on sale, it looks like. Shipping's only 7 bucks. I don't think you can get them presharpened, but you could then send it out to get sharpened if you wanted to. I use it just about everyday and get decent shaves. That might save you a couple of bucks and start you out with a new razor.

i hear you Mike but unfortunately i live in hong kong and if you're not aware of this, hong kong to my knowledge do NOT have any honemeisters that specialise in SR, well, maybe they can do kitchen knives but hey this SR is going on my face so i thought i'd better get a hone

i'm a pilot here in hong kong but there isn't much in terms of DE or SR shaving apart from some SR that i've heard that comes from China.

Personally, I'd put off learning how to hone for now. I'd wait and see how SR shaving and I got along. If you really want to get something to maintain your straight's edge, I'd pick up a paddle strop and some chrome oxide. Or read up about how to make one with balsa wood - should be fairly easily found anywhere. Pastes are easier to use, and should keep you going for a few months before your razor needs to be touched up on a hone.

thanks Ray, well that's the problem .. a few months goes by pretty quick and my shipping charges is not just sending around the us , it'll be international shipping so each time i ship will be $20 or so dollars.
i figure i'd go ahead and get all the necessary equipment in 1 pop.

well, no need to answer this thread anymore.. i took the plunge and went ahead and ordered the dovo tortoise special which is Don & Lynn's starter set.
i bought a 12k hone as well so i can do some touch ups later on ..
can't wait to get my hands on it and compare SR to what i've been doing with DE shaving, it'll be interesting to compare the 2 methods

Haha sorry, didn't see this. I was going to say to get the tortoise dovo special but it's a bit more expensive so I didn't! It's a pretty razor. Enjoy!

Your gonna like the DOVO Special tortise, I use the same one in a 6/8 , IMO a perfect razor for a starter I wouldnt have wanted anything more or anything less, and I sure Im gonna get plenty of years out of it.
