Thanked: 30Were to get a good strop
Hello
I just joined this group a few days ago and I have never straight razor shaved before. I purchased a used vintage DOVO from Ebay and have yet to receive it. I intend to send it to one of the honemeisters to be sharpened when I receive it. I still need to purchase a strop and was wondering where to get a decent strop at a good price and what brand to purchase ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank You

You might also check the classifieds on SRP as there are a few out there as well. Both Tony Miller and SRD make very good strops, I myself have a TM and am very happy with it.
Enjoy

I bought mine on ruprazor.com I have been told that it is a very good strop for beginners and is good quality. And you cant really beat the price ($20).

Can't go wrong with any of these previous suggestions. I have a Tony miller, but I'll be getting an SRD soon, and probably a kenrup for my uncle soon.

i'd caution you against ebay - it's even harder to buy good strop there than to buy a new razor. the sellers have no idea what makes a strop useable and what makes it junk, so you're pretty much gambling.
i've gotten some fantastic strops there, but i've thrown away few as well. it's only worth if you want to try a bunch of strops so on average you'll do alright, which is not your case.
personally i prefer used strops since the leather is already broken in and works better than when they're new. but the smell of brand new leather is also very nice, so i've got that too

Thanked: 4FWIW, I got the SRD Premium I 3" strop... I love it. As far as wreaking havoc, just be careful (you're going to use no pressure anyway, so you should be careful anyway!) and if you happen to nick it, for another 20 dollars you can get a new strip of leather to replace it. I ordered on a Monday night and it was in my home on Thursday... Ohio to Arizona. Can't be beat.
Also, should you choose, you can now get a free strop with purchase of a razor of a certain dollar value. Not a bad deal, IYAM.

Under $50 I always recommend the same strop an Illinois #827 Russian you can get them for about $30 and they have linen and leather and work great....

Thanked: 20strop
If you can afford it get a linen/cotton combo and a latigo/horsehide combo. They will come in handy when stropping. But a good latigo will do by itself.

Welcome, I have one of Tony Miller's 3in Red Latigo strops. It's great, no complaints here. I also have some nice Vintage hanging and loom strops which are great too. As Gugi, said be careful when buying on Ebay. Stick to reputable Vendors, like Straight Razor Designs and Tony Miller for new strops...
