My first razor sharpening.
Ok, It is an S.R.Droescher Classic (now in the database) and I finished sharpening it last night on a 16K Shapton and then a srtopping of 50 times on horsehide. It looked pretty close to the Morley I've been using under a micrscope. This morning I proceeded to shave with it and it did well, I didn't run into any trouble except for the chin (this blade is a bit larger than the Morley). It took a 3rd trip across that region to get it smooth, all in all it went well. When finished, using aftershave made my face feel "warmer" than normal but it was a very close shave. I do not have a paste strop as yet but that's the next step. What else can I say but now I'm a straight shaver for life.
I know I still need loads of practice and a little more equipment but I know I'll get there.
This is one I'll never forget.

On Saturday I was at the WNY meet up and Holli4 and JoeD and CarrieM taught me how to hone and different techniques and stuff, and I got a couple shave ready. Isn't it a great feeling?

Thanked: 127Congratulations! Feels good doesn't it? You can make a pasted strop for under $5 complete with a piece of scrap leather from the local leather shop and a piece of wood. I don't remember seeing information anywhere on how many passes it takes to get a really smooth shave, but I generally have a problem on the right and left side of my chin. Some days I can get a smooth shave with 3 passes and others it takes 6. But who cares? If you find you can't live with that then please send your razor to me and I will dispose of it for you. Just kidding!!!! Good luck and that's a nice looking razor.

Since you already have a 16k Shapton , I don't think you need a pasted strop . After I got my 15k Shapton I never used my pasted paddle strops again .
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .

Thanked: 127Dave5225 is correct about using a pasted strop if you are using crox. .5 crox is equivelant to 16K so it would be the same as the shapton, however, the feel of the blade might be a little smoother off the crox then the shapton. Don't know for sure, since it is your face, but it wouldn't hurt to try both. Just my humble opinion.

ENUF2,congrats to you and to khaos on honing your own. I too remember how excited I was when I finally shaved with a razor that I actually honed myself. A great feeling and I keep chasing it . Honing can become as much of an enjoyable pastime as shaving IME.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Good job on the cleanup with the Droescher. You are new to the honing so I think you did real well. The CrO pasted strop will get the edge even smoother. The Cerium Oxide works well on the pasted strop as well. If you are unsure about the quality of the shave go back to the hones again. Sometimes it takes me three or more times to get it like I want it. I noticed I am impatient with the lower grit hones and move on before I should.
