    Default STRAIGHT RAZOR PRICEING

Any gray beards or men of deep knowledge please weigh in.

As an example. DOVO razors very greatly in price. In the case of DOVO, and others, is the price related to exotic or lesser material scales with the quality of steel the same in their product line or does the quality of steel also drive the price?

    Looking for value:

    Welcome Mikel.

I don't know the specifics of the steels Dovo uses, but in my opinion some of their razors shave better than others. It could be related to the steel, or it could be related to something else. The price tag doesn't always correlate with how a razor shaves.
If you're looking for value a good place to save money is 'new' and cosmetically perfect. But that may not be something you want to give up.

there are many things the affect price. One of them is the quality of the steel. That is, it is either known as a good shaver, assumed to be one becuase of where it was made, or known not to be one.

I have a Dovo 'best quality' which I think is their cheapest razor, it's great. Very different from my old sheffields, but still, a very capable shaver and I wouldn't get rid of it.

Yes and Yes, With Dovo some of the pricing is for the scales, but also most is in regards to the steel but more importantly the grind and quality of grind on the razor. The more time put into the grind affects the price. Also some of their tougher grinds are only done by one or two people. Dovos quality has dramatically improved over the last few years. they are really putting out some great razors.

Agreed. I just purchased a Bergisher Lowe from Don, Not only are the scales, (Bone) beautiful, It a wonderful shaver. The steel is different from the Bismarcks, but they're all good. Dovo remains one of my favorite and go to razors....The take and hold edge wonderfully. If your not to picky about scales, Dovo is an excellent value, and I believe on sale at SRD right now...You can pick one up for under 100.00, and it'll be honed by Lynn, with 1 more free honing, and I guarantee you'll be happy....

I'm not sure about the quality of the steel, but if you look at the complete line of DOVO razors, you can see the price go up as the scales get more exotic, even with the same blade.

I wonder if you could buy an inexpensive DOVO and have it rescaled wth something really exotic.

You definitely can. Lots of the guys here do rescaling, in everything from your basic hardwoods, to horn and bone, to mammoth ivory, to carbon fiber. The only real limit is your wallet.

I am not into fancy scales, but I do go for great straights blades. Dovo tries their best to satisfy everyone.

Once the Dovo No. 55 NOS got to be known as an awesome shaver, the price went up due to nicer scales being put on them. The lucky ones got these with the no frills scales and I am one of them.

I also have a Dovo Best Class straight without a fancy scale and it gives a great shave as well.

I started with a Dovo Tortoise and although a decent shaver, it can not measure up to these other blades in performance and feel. So the big bucks do buy the better straight blades. But sometimes you have to buy the fancy scale along with it and thats just the price of doing business in getting the better straight razors.

Welcome to SRP and good luck in your decision.
