I'm fairly new to SR and very inexperience, so I can't really get you the right advice, gladly all the masters here has already respond you well (one point why I love being a part of this community)
regarding to the size of blade, I personally think (maybe I'm wrong) it's depend on your comfortabilitymention that, it might include your face's contour. For my case, I need not only a preferred width of blade (which is 5/8 and below) but also the length of the blade to compensate with my small face
different points of blade might also helps to work in several area (in my case square point really help me to cut the beard in a very funny angle and mustache - not mentioning, it's good for trimming
)
one important thing that I've learn so far is beard prep...something that I just encounter when I start SR, never knew about it before when I use mach3 (no one told me toomy dad shaves with electric shaver and never touch even a safety razor)
good luck,

What type of safety razors?
Face preparation is so commonly a problem:
Safety razors or straight razors ALL depend on
preshave preparation. An inexpensive brush
and one of a variety of shave soaps used well
will much improve any shave.
The low ball entry to wet shaving is the "Van Der Hagen
Premium Shave Set (Soap, Bowl, Brush)". You can
later upgrade and add a worth shave cream like Proraso Proraso
Shave Cream or a worthy shave soap... Shop
at Walmart, CVS, Amazon or one of our sponsors here.
The key if there is one is to first wash your face then build a lather
in the bowel adding water bit by bit. Water and time is your friend
make sure the wet lather sits on your whiskers a full three min.
You may need to reapply more wet lather to keep your whiskers wet.
Next shave with a LIGHT touch.
Above I asked which safety razor you have and use.
I am a fan of any razor that places a single blade only
on the face. It can be the Yellow handled BiC, a double
edge razor, shavette, Feather, or a straight razor. The tossables
with two, three, four and more blades are not an improvement IMO.
They clog and cut my whiskers too far under the skin when
they are not clogged.
For those with a history of problems the Yellow Handled
tossables are interesting because you can hold them with
two fingers at the end of the handle and almost eliminate
bad sideways motions or excessive pressure that give so
many shavers cuts.
Double edge razors are a common solution for some. The
variety of blades available makes it possible to find one
that matches your face (sample pack on the internet).
As for full hollow, half hollow, quarter hollow razors the
number one issue is getting and keeping the razor sharp.
A full hollow lets me feel my whiskers, I suspect a lot
like your shavette.
While you shop for a different blade make a point of improving
your shave prep. A brush, bowel, shave soap/ cream and time
can make a big improvement no matter what blade.

Thanked: 199Ok guys, here's the product:
Stephan Smooth Shave Cream - 16 oz. - The World's Smoothest ShaveÂ*
This stuff works amazingly well! Smear some on your face and let it penetrate for a couple minutes, then throw your shaving cream on over top and go to town!
A fellow student is using his son to shave for his license exam, and his son's beard if VERY thick and coarse. He said this stuff made a WORLD of difference in softening up his son's beard before he shaved him. He also used it on me before shaving me, and I can tell you it made a difference as well.
It's pretty cheap, so if you have a coarse beard, try it out! It might make all the difference!
Hope this helpsLast edited by avatar1999; 04-21-2010 at 02:47 AM.

Just fired an order (+ exfoliating pre-shave + rescue post-shave)...this stuff (for 16 oz...which is ~3 times the size of a regular GFT or AOS or similar creme tub @ $30 for ~5 oz.) is pretty cheap...roughly speaking, it is ~30 times cheaper...Holy Shave man!!! what has anyone got to lose???
Thanks Rob,
Robert
