Thanked: 11CrOx Forever
Why does using CrOx round your edge? If it is because the strop bends when you stop, then could you use a balsa strop to avoid rounding?

It perfects and polishes more than rounds.
Yes CrOx on a solid base: leather on a plank; balsa on a blank, paste on glass
will maintain a more perfect bevel better than CrOx on a hanging strop.
In general this is a non problem. The ideal time to use
CrOx or another sub micron abrasive on a hanging strop is
right after the blade has been honed. It gives that final
polish that some think makes for a smooth shave (I do).
Two shaves later most should be using clean canvas and
clean leather to maintain the blade on a day to day basis. An
occasional say once a week visit to the pasted strop can postpone
the need for a refresh honing.
CrOx on balsa for personal use in my opinion can eliminate the need
for an expensive +12K finishing hone. It will not eliminate HAD
but that is another issue. For a professional I doubt that balsa hones
can be refreshed as well as modern ultra fine hones but that
is another kettle of fish.
I just built a +25" balsa hone with a scrap plywood backing.
I intend to load it with CrOx and give it a test drive... any day now...

Thanked: 13247Who says it rounds your edge?????
You know I have heard all this, and I actually did an experiment using Diamond pastes...Actually over-using Diamond and never found the end of the edge...
http://straightrazorpalace.com/strop...eriment-2.html
That was over 70 shaves same razor, I have heard all kinds of theory on the edges, but I don't actually listen to most of that, I just try stuff, and decide...
Here is my conclusion
Either I am the best stropper in the world (doubtful)
or perhaps the rounding/degradation occurs after the 76 shaves on an over pasted razor (Who gives a hoot at that time)...
Either way I would not take to many theories to heart, just try them yourself and decide...

Golly Glenn you might be one of the better stroppers out there,
yes sir the rumors are out there....
Still the original poster should follow the link to your experiment
and note your once a week visit to the pasted strop loaded with
sub micron abrasive. Hanging strop or balsa I do not
think it matters.

Thanked: 11I read this post a while ago, but i don't think it registered sufficiently in my mind. There are so many other posts that state (as fact) that pastes will round your edge that i think this one post got drowned out.
So far, i am not prone to HAD so i think i will stick with using my philly until it no longer sharpens my blade sufficiently.
If/when i find that my razor can no longer be sharped by paste alone, i will make sure i post.

The CrO paste is also used to refresh the edge when your razor begins to tug. I use it thus when that happens. When the CrO paste no longer refreshes the blade sufficiently it's time for a barber's hone or something like a Norton 4K/8K followed by the CrO. Experience will let you know when to do this. Unless you damage your edge (like dinging it against the faucet, like all of us has at some point), you will not need to put a new edge on the razor for a very long time.
