Thanked: 46ugh..my black electrical tape!
I am using 3M Super 33+ ...bought cheap at Target in store..no matter if I double or single tape the pulling downward direction starts to wear it away..pushing direction of tape on my is fine.

Thanked: 21yup, that's the worst electrical tape for honing IMO. You'll also notice it rubs off on your hone and then you hone over little pieces of it...then when you take the tape off, it leaves a sticky residue on your blade...

I've been using the super 33 for a while now and haven't had any problems at all with it other than leaving a little residue behind when removing the tape and that can be removed easy enough.

Thanked: 2591I like the Duck electric tape no residue left on the blade. As far as wear when honing, all tapes do.

Thanked: 993I wonder if you guys have a bad roll or two. I've been using the 33+ for about two years now, and on every blade that comes through my door.
I do notice that it leaves a bit of residue, and it generally doesn't favour oil (when i use my Charnely), but other than that I love it. It's also the thinnest tape out there....
Personally, I think it's great. I like the 700 too, but I'd rather use the 33+

I think, having once read on 3m's site, that the different numbers mostly deal with the tapes hardness or softness, and likewise for the adhesive.
*If you use one best suited for outside cold weather in your shop or home to hone it will probably be more likely to loose adhesive and slough off the tape on your hone because it will be designed to keep it's flexibility and stickiness in colder temps, and vice versa.
I used to think the 700 and 1700 were tape thickness, but according to their site the thickness is the same. I'm not sure where the 33+ falls in their lineup. Anyway, that's what I read.
Edit: *Denotes a conclusion on my part, honing was not on their site.
