Thanked: 0Hi everybody
Gentlemen,
It is my first post therefore let me introduce myself, my name is Norm, I am 48 year old and I live in Montreal PQ. As far as I can remember I was always interested in straight razor, I don’t know why, maybe it is the mystic behind it. 25 year ego in my early 20 I received one as a gift but because of a lack of knowledge and information I was not very successful eventhow all my effort, I got discourage therefore in the drawer for 25 years went the shaver but I was wet shaving with a DE since then . A couple of years ego I found this site by accident and decide to compromise with an Feather AC, interesting tool, it is giving me a perfect shave, extremely close, very smooth with zero irritation but more important it give me the chance to fine tune my shaving technique to. Anyway for some reason I decide to get the traditional straight honed by an expert of this site, give another try and BANG, men what a great shave I got, I could not believe it, finally I could experience the pleasure of a perfect shave with a traditional straight razor.
Therefore here I am ready to take the plunge to learn the basic of honing and stropping. I did loose some interest in my beloved Feather AC but I will keep it anyway. It is a great tool, it gives perfect shave and it will be a good point of comparison going through the learning curve of the honing and stropping technique
Have a great day, I will be back with tons of question and sorry for any spelling mistake since English is not my first language.

Welcome aboard Norm. Make sure you read all of the help files and browse/search through the honing/strops forums as they contain a WEALTH of information on getting/keeping your blades shaving sharp. If you can't find a bit of specific information, we're more than willing to help you with it. Don't worry about your English as it's perfectly understandable and you're not the only ESL-er here. Enjeux!

If either one of you is an environmentalist, you can say that you are tired of disposable gear that is a waste of materials, energy and has a major impact on the landfills. About 100,000,000,000 disposable cartriges end up on landfills every year.

Thanked: 2Along with the environmental concerns, think of the financial savings. After the initial start up costs what else do you need to buy? Occasionally some soap, whatever skin care products you prefer (pre/after shaves) and that's about it, isn't it? Other than the rare replacement strops and such. Blades for my Mach3 cost roughly $1 a piece depending on where I buy and that really adds up quickly.
For me it's more about getting back to the old ways. Newer isn't always better and our heritage is rapidly being lost in this fast paced world. I've been an avid fly fisherman for almost fifteen years now and gave alway my last spinning rod/reel combo about ten years ago. I may be turning into an old phart but at least I'm doing it with style!

Talking about financial savings would be opening a Pandora's box once you develop RAD (Razor Acquisition Disorder), HAD (Hone A.D.), SBAD (Shaving Brush A. D.) or any other acquisition disorder. I'd rather keep that topic on the down-low if I were you.
