    Default first go

so I just got my Hyane 3/8 razor yesterday and did my first shave this morning. The razor was honed but it's very apparent that it needs to be stropped. It seems not nearly sharp enough, especially across or against the grain. I do have far better fine motor control than most so I managed to avoid cutting myself. The thing is, my facial hair is so thick and dense that I NEED to go against the grain the get a smooth shave, otherwise it seems like I haven't shaved at all. I'm still learning to strop properly. I also did a search for a member close to me that may be able to give me a little bit of hands on assistance. If anyone is near welland ontario, please help me out! A second opinion would be phenomenal!

    Congrats on your first shave!

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty. Was the razor freshly honed by a straight razor user? Your idea of finding someone within driving distance to you to show you the ropes is right on & should be strongly persued.

Don't get cocky about those superman fine motor skills just yet...

I have to ask why a 3/8 razor? I ask this because it's really easy to roll the edge on a 4/8 razor, much less a 3/8 while stropping.

So far my fine motor skills just enable me to not loose control of the blade/force it in a manner that I shouldn't.
I purchased the razor from SRP user airportcopper who said it had been professionally honed. He said "clean, strop and shave".
I sent someone a message from the next town and am hoping that they reply soon. I also realize that not everyone would put their location on their profile, which is partly why I made this post.
I got a 3/8 because I figured it would be easier to get those hard to shave places under my jaw line (I'm a rather thin person).
I am, however, now realizing that I've made it considerably more difficult to learn to strop!

Again, anyone near Welland Ontario that would be willing to lend a hand would be appreciated to no end!

This does not sound like a freshly honed razor as most of us who send a razor out request that nothing is done to it but wipe the oil off it and shave.

I agree, the "location" section is a pet peave of mine. I understand folks being concerned, but a nearby "town" would suffice & keep identity thiefs at bay. They could at least put a regional location as I have done...

I am sending an email to airportcopper to clear up when it was honed. The razor did not pass the hanging hair test, by the way, and while I know it is not the final word, I feel I should mention it. I know that usually you use a whetstone to hone, however, is this the only way to hone? I ask because my neighbour has some sort of block that he uses to sharpen chisels and such with oil. I would never let him hone my razor without first making sure that this is an acceptable way to hone a straight razor.

You can use oil stones also. Even with that I wouldn't let your neighbor anywhere near your razor unless he uses a straight razor. Chisels and straight razors are very different.

He doesn't use a straight, however, he is very good with blades in general. If it needs to be honed anyway, which I now strongly believe it does, then no harm done I suppose. I do trust him and I have watched numerous videos of razors being honed so I have a fairly good idea of how it should look. worst comes to worst, I'll have to get it honed, which it needs anyway. In that sense....no harm done?

    update
We ended up not doing any honing and instead making a temp strop from an old tool belt that we cleaned up. I'll post a picture of it in a bit so you can have a chuckle. It looks like crap but works wonderfully!

Had a bit more luck today with a bit less pulling. It's good to know that it was honed by Lynn. The only thing that made me question the honing was the above comment made by shooter74743, mostly because his membership says "mentor". You guys are my go to experts as I have no frame of reference when it comes to this.
What I'm doing is using the straight on my sideburn/cheek areas purely to get used to shaving with the razor. I then have to go back and use my mach3 to be able to get an actually close shave...BBS as you chaps call it.
To answer your other question, yes....I have shaved against the grain before lol I've been shaving for over ten years and have thick, coarse hair, probably the french blood in me! If I DIDN'T shave against the grain, it would honestly look like I haven't even shaved....kind of like my first few tries with the straight are going lol
