The problem is that people don't listen to the most important piece of advice we give here, "Slow Down"
No people don't usually go at this slow. How many times have we told people to learn to shave before they start honing?? Why? because they don't think the razor is sharp.... Technique and learning is everything.
Personally, I haven't bought a new/used razor in over two years. Granted, I have "cough" plenty in rotation and "cough" a "few" still needing scales made for them when I get around to it.

This hobby "saves" money about like tying your own flies does, especially if you get into all the AD's!

I have spent a fair amount, but not a huge amount, of money in this hobby and never had any illusions about it being a money saver. My partner does not have any really expensive hobbies and doesn't criticize me for having a small collection of stationery or razors.

One could perhaps find a way to do the straight razor thing frugally, but then there'd be virtually no reason to participate in the communities that lured them into the hobby in the first place.
