Been slicing and dicing my whiskers with cold steel for about 6 months now. Yeah, I'm all in. But don't you think we should dispel the myth that cutthroat shaving is a "money saver"? Yeah, the plastic multis are expensive, and the canned shaving cream is a step above Cool Whip in effective beard control, but c'mon fellahs---this "thing of ours" as the Black Hand says, is not exactly for the frugal. And that's okay. Straight shaving is an exclusive club. A fraternity for men who have and take the time to do things right. Pride in a job well done. And a touch of narcissism to beam with pride when someone notices a particular BBS we may have accomplished. But, let's not mislead the newb's venturing out. This can be a money drain. $200+ razors, $100 brush, even friggin' $35 bucks for a bar of shave soap. Wow. I don't know about you, but I'm going to have to start a discretionary fund for my shave purchases so wifey doesn't go for the rolling pin to my noggin when the Visa statements roll in. Just saying. Even if you go the "el cheapo" route (not reccommended, by the way) you're still out at least $100. How do you explain that to the significant other when you're going over the budget?

You're not. just open her shoe compartment and start talking about handbags and she will be tamed. If not, mention the hairdresser's bills.

Once you buy the initial gear and assuming you are in it for shaving and not as a hobby in the long run it is way cheaper. Of course if you start stockpiling soaps and strops and razors and brushes and the rest it's a different story.

This to shall pass,I may be a long expensive haul.But the day will come when you realize that the great razors are just tools and you only need a few.
Strops are just strops and you only need one,same with brushes.Cheap soaps work just as well as expensive soaps

As said up thread, if you're just in for the shaving and not collecting or anything, then you'll start saving within a year or so.

That's an arms race that you cannot win, my friend. My wife is obsessed with these red soled shoes by some fey designer who's name escapes me, but four figure price tag does not.

Get her into it!! I just bought a nice vintage ladies gillette DE for my bride and some feminine soap from Mama Bear, she loves it! She says she gets the best shaves she has ever had!

As stated above, if you purchase just what you need you start saving money in year two or so. If you catch RAD from SRP then the only cure is to spend, spend, spend. Set goals and limits for what you want and you may not blow your kids college fund!

Oh, here is a phrase that may come in handy. "But it is a both useful and collectible!"
