    I use Oxyclean, a few tablespoons in a coffee cup with water up a bit over the handle/hair transition, bristles down. Let it fizzle for a while.
    As you pour out the cup, look at what comes out. Repeat as necessary
    I get a LOT more crud out of a new knot than I have ever gotten out of a used one. Some shampoo, no issues.
    I only have a few used ones, but they appeared quite pristine, so I cleaned them and am glad I did. YMMV
