I get a LOT more crud out of a new knot than I have ever gotten out of a used one. Some shampoo, no issues.
I only have a few used ones, but they appeared quite pristine, so I cleaned them and am glad I did. YMMV
That's because the crud in a new brush is superficial stuff at the surface that easily washes out. With the old brush all that grunge doesn't come out. That's why you don't get as much out of the old one.

    But of course!
From my viewpoint, I had just as soon use a brush which is clean and well taken care of as I had one from a nasty Chinese badger processed in a Chinese factory which has to be cleaned multiple times to rid it of stinky brown crap.
    Again, YMMV

    I rest my case.
