Many opinions on this. Some guys say a washing in an antibacterial soap does the trick...probably works as well as anything. I have soaked a used brush in a Barbicide solution for about 10 minutes with no ill effects. I see no reason why a good soak, agitation, and rinse in a quality antibacterial soap (like Dial or Lysol) would not be all that is necessary.
I have never heard of anybody catching anything from a used brush. Lots of " OH, I would never, that's gross comments" but really, The thing lived most of it's life in soap. A little cleaning should be all it needs.
Then there is the option of putting in a new knot.
Yea. soap is soap. When I was in basic training 1969 it was an open bay barracks and the shower had 5-6 shower heads. we would us a bar of soap until it was gone and then use another until it was gone. same thing with the shaving soap. soap is soap. It's used to shave or get clean. it cleans us clothes dishes ect. Of course that's just one mans opinion.
I have bought and use several vintage brushes, soak in hot water and palm lather with a dollop of shampoo until the lather remains white.
Soak in a 50 percent white vinegar and warm water for 15-20 mins, rinse in warm water and shampoo again to remove the vinegar and any soap that has come loose with the vinegar.
Dry well by tamping on a towel or micro fiber and flagging on the edge of your palm covered with a towel or micro fiber till dry.
Hang in a brush holder, handle up.
If you use a used shaving Brush,Your going to die,Plain and simple:)
Even if you don’t use a Shaving Brush… there is a very good chance you will die…rumor has it…
Good , you first. I need someone to clean up all the🐮💩 along the way😄
I have a very old Plisson 2 band I found at an antique store about 3 or4 years ago. Smelled of musty cardboard, or that "antique store" smell. Lathered some Williams soap about 5 or 6 times rinsing very thoroughly after each time. Worked like a charm!

Very nice, not all that familiar with brushes. I think its becoming a new AD for me though 😉 bu what do you mean by the bands

Notice the black and white bands on the badger hair. 2 band on the left, 3 band on the right.
My Plisson may look 3 bandish.... but is a high loft 2 band. Loft is how much hair is set above the handle.
Gotcha. What i though but clarification is always better. My motto, the stupid question is the one not asked
Yes, soap is soap however do you know who owned it? Do you know for a fact it was used for soap? Maybe it was used to apply ......(fill in the blanks). That's why I don't use a used brush.
Even if it was used for shaving soap no matter what you do you'll never get the base of the knot really cleaned.
If you have ever re-knotted a brush,As big says, you will not believe the stuff that is in the base of the knot, can be very ugly.

Bill sorry for your losses , now what you said about the stuff that stays in a brush from the previous owner , is true I clean my brushes really good and I sent one to Bill for re knot and he informed me of the build up in there, so extreme measures would have to be used to get rid of all, I myself don't use someone elses brush , I,m just too much of a clean freak, but if I found a brush handle I liked a lot I would have it re knotted ,, but to each there own, one way or the other isn't right or wrong , its choice tc
I use Oxyclean, a few tablespoons in a coffee cup with water up a bit over the handle/hair transition, bristles down. Let it fizzle for a while.
As you pour out the cup, look at what comes out. Repeat as necessary
I get a LOT more crud out of a new knot than I have ever gotten out of a used one. Some shampoo, no issues.
I only have a few used ones, but they appeared quite pristine, so I cleaned them and am glad I did. YMMV
I never clean my brushes,But I know what is at the base of them, alot of built up grunge.
But I am the only person that uses them,no harm, no foul.
But of course!
From my viewpoint, I had just as soon use a brush which is clean and well taken care of as I had one from a nasty Chinese badger processed in a Chinese factory which has to be cleaned multiple times to rid it of stinky brown crap.
Again, YMMV
So a Badger swimming in a mucky pond for years and laying in poop and muddy decaying den, is cleaner than a human, that is using soap to wash himself…
I wash them both in soap and vinegar, new and vintage. There is a reason a new knot smell like urine…
It all comes off with proper cleaning. They say an ATM is dirtier than the average toilet seat…
I suppose it depends upon the human! ;)
After they get done processing the hair for yer brush it's cleaner than the hair on yer head. If you have any that is-Har har.
That's the magic elixir you are throwing away. You should drink the stuff. it will turn you into Superman.
The learning never stops on SRP, just from this thread I learned that the Chinese badger is nasty.....but, not as nasty as the Honey Badger! And yet another use for OxiClean (Tom don't drink that stuff remember, the original pitchman for OxiClean died.
He died cause he didn't drink the stuff. It would have saved him and more.
Tom, heads up, thebigspendur is trying to get you kilt....he's got that tagline about shooting..now he is trying to poison a fellow member. And before Gengis Khan, his Avatar was himself with crossed revolvers. Forum is going to Hell in a handbasket.
Na. Spendur is a real sweetheart underneath that tough exterior. ;) Besides, seems I remember that oxyclean nut was into something else?
Are you sure he's not[emoji48] [emoji1]
Pretty sure..........
