    With that much of a gap in the vertical split and the knot is still snug the knot must have swelled over time to cause the cracking.

    If you like the knot have it removed and installed in a new handle. I am sure someone can make you a copy of the Polo handle to put the knot in.

    If you have to soak a brush before lathering with it you might want to consider only letting the tip of the knot soak. Personally, I do not soak any of my brushes but just do a quick swish of the tips in water, shake and load the brush with soap. So far, touch wood, no problems.
