Thread: My Third Thater 4125/B

I have several Thäter brushes and I feel that their quality and performance are as good as you can get. I do find the 2-Band knots to have a little more backbone than the three band. The softness of their knots is hard to beat. I also find them comparable to the Shavemac 2-band Silvertip knots. I tend to order more Shavemacs as I can order the knot and put it in a custom handle, or have Shavemac make a custom handle for me. Shavemac also offers a D01 2-band knot, which has a great deal of scrub. I much prefer Thäter and Shavemac knots to Simpson, as Simpson manchurian knots are just too dense for me, tend to be lather hogs, and I don't enjoy the firmness of their bristles. I also don't care for their newer 2-band knots. Congratulations on your new brush and enjoy your Thäter brushes. I've sure enjoyed mine.

If you're not obsessing about brushes, don't spend $$$ on them. From what I get, you're using an AoS pure badger with creams and the Simpson with hard soaps and want something in between. Why not try an Omega boar for $-$$? One of their knots in the 24mm by 55mm range should be able to handle anything. The one I have is the 80267, and it really does the trick.

Thanked: 3227Yea, spending that kind of money on a brush hoping it will be what you want would and did scare me too. My best guess from what you have said is that a 2 band silver tip badger brush may be what you are looking for. I have about 4-5 of those from various makers and all, to me, are soft in the tips with good backbone/rigidity to allow making a lather from hard soaps or creams. Don't ask me how many badger brushes I had to buy to find the type I like it would be embarrassing. Unfortunately most folks have to try a few before you get to the Goldilocks moment.

Yea Bob's got it. Brushes are one of those things you have to try to find the right one for you.
The best advice is go with a middle of the road and then fine tune from there up or down the next time.
You could go with some of the bargain brands like Omega and Vie Long and you won't be out much if you don't like what you get.
Personally I think you would be happy with one of those two banders as Bob suggested. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 4206I Own one of pretty much all the aforementioned brands and I too agree with Bob
Thater 2 band 4125 bulb would be a reasonable next step up in a brush that’s stiff and still soft.
The shavemac DO1 2band is the height of bulb density and integrity for sure. IMO.

I'd be curious as to the knot dimensions that Mr. earcutter already owns and apparently prefers. That might help to dial-in on a recommendable two-band knot if that's the direction we're headed here.

Thanked: 3227For me a middle of the road 2 band badger knot would be one that has a loft 2X the size of the knot give or take a couple of silly mms. All of mine are in that range and have worked out quite well to the point I am in no hurry to get rid of any of them. If you don't want to pop for a high end Euro brush maker, some the Chinese makers have been getting good reviews of their 2 band finest knotted brushes. That may be a good place to get your feet wet at a nominal cost. You may also find, if you are lucky, that the Chinese 2 band finest ticks all the boxes for you and is all you need.
