    Default My Third Thater 4125/B

In April of this year I replaced my one and only brush a Col Conk silvertip that was probably 20 mm with a new Thater 30mm 4125/4 B Three Band. I loved it so much I bought a second Thater a 4125/6 B a 35 mm brush also a three band. I have this week received a third Thater, a 4125/5 B 32 mm this one is two band. Okay, I’ve shaved with Thater 4125s in three different size knots and in two and three band. I love them all. All are excellent for use with either soap or cream. I can’t tell a difference about the backbone BS. They are all fantastic brushes. All work perfectly with soap or cream. All are super soft on your face. I cannot tell any difference between Thater 4125 Three Band vs Two band. These are without question the most dense knots I’ve ever seen and from the first one in April till now none have shed a single hair! I am not and won’t be a collector of a dozen or more brushes. I’m sure Simpson’s and others are very nice but I don’t see anyone beating out the Thater especially the 4125 series. I love them.Name: 2273278B-08BE-4617-B921-E7CFA36179DD.jpg

Among the handful of premium makers Thater is right up there. I don't think you can beat them. You can go custom and get fancy handles but concerning the business end of the brush you be at the top.

    Nice!!

Timely post for me. I’ve never been able to get into brushes. I got one in my original AoS starter kit, but I found it “itching.” So I got a Simpson. Way softer, bit no where near as ridged (I’m assuming that’s what they refer to as backbone, but I’m not sure - like I said, not into brushes).

Well, times have seen me no longer own a single cream, and I’ve transitioned back to that old AoS brush from my Simpson brush because it laters faster and doesn’t get all sloppy. But now I’m wishing I had the rigidity or backbone of the AoS brush, with the soft of my Simpson.

I want a brush to love.

Anyway, I was going to buy a bunch of synthetics (they are in my cart lol) and try to find a winner, until reading your thread. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like thier Thater. Maybe that’s how I need to go.

    Thanks for the review.

David, I guarantee you cannot go wrong with a Thater Brush. They are rigid enough yet the brush feels like mink against your face. They hold a lot of water and soap. The top of the line is their 4125. The handles come in black or ivory color and feel great in your hand. You can get a bulb or fan shape in either two or three band. I’ll tell you how sold I am on Thater Brushes; you buy yourself a Thater 4125 and if you don’t love it I’ll buy it from you! I prefer the bulb shape and I personally like a bigger brush which is why I started with a 30 mm. And I very much prefer a bulb over a fan. You will love Thater Brushes. Maggard always has a nice selection.

Synthetics, if you get a quality one will lather just as good as a premium badger however it all ends there. They are all business and no pleasure. Once you have used a good badger I can't see how anyone would prefer a synthetic except maybe for travel. They are real convenient for that cause they dry real fast.

If you prize the luxury sensation badger is the way to go.

Thaters are decent brushes, but ill say this I got rid of 2 of them after I got Shavemac brushes, still have my Simpsons also,, lots of custom, but as Spendur says its the knot end you have to deal with there so I have been changing them all to Shavemac knots. just remember you haven't really spent much time with all the brushes to think there aren't any as good or better. It is always good to hear that a user is very happy with their new purchases but that was my first thought too. Thater is a well know quality brand of shaving brush and it is not surprising that coming from using a Col Conk silvertip tip brush a person would be blown away by the improvement gained.

For over 6 years, I've miraculously managed to get by with my single shaving brush, a Thater 4125/2 B (or 3? always forget this #).

Still, since I've never tried another badger knot, I am not about to proselytize Thater beyond giving them a solid thumbs up.

No one on this site has tried everything that exists in any category be it brushes or soaps or razors or anything else so it's always a IMHO type thing. Even if some did it's still personal preference in all cases.

If you asked me what is the best brush in the world I'd say the old (and no longer available) two banders which were only made by Plisson, Simpson, and the Morris and Forndran guy to (my knowledge). The Manchurians they make now supposedly are their replacement but though they are the closest they are still quite different.

Since there is no wally world of shave gear where we can sample everything you just have to read folks experiences and make the leap of faith when you buy. Sometimes it's the right choice and sometimes not.

Usually when many members like an item a lot that is usually a sign it's a quality item that works really well. It may not be the best for you but it's usually a safe pick.

I love my Thater 2 band but the back bone is no where near the level of a Simpsons Manchurian or M&F Finest.

As with most things in this sport, whats good for the goose is not always good for the gander. Everyone's taste is different to a degree. Unfortunately you have to try a bunch of brushes to decide what you like and then different batches of the same grade will feel different.
