What's the difference between a bowl and a mug? Any round container between 3 and 6 inches in diameter ought to work
Find me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

I would say that a mug has, on the inside, a more flat bottom. And will often be sporting a handle although not always.

I use one of the old spice soap mugs, also picked up an american airlines soup mug that also works really well.

Have you tried one of the mugs with the original OS soaps in it? I've been wanting to pick one up to see how it performs....see them on the "bay" all the time.

I use a ramikin that sits inside a matching soup mug as a Kmart scuttle.

I used to use a coffee mug made from clay. The sides on a coffe mug are pretty high and the opening small so the handle clunked the sides all the time. With a clay mug it didn't bother me. When my, then, girlfriend knocked it off the sink and broke it she replaced it with a neat Far Side mug, one of my favorite comics. The problem was it was ceremic, and thinner so when the handle of my brush hit it it rang like a bell. Not what I could take first thing in the morning, especially back in my roaring twenties.

I have a similar experience with Tim viz mugs. When I started wet shaving I tossed some Burma Shave cakes into a mug I got from a temp job I worked at one point. On the one hand, it worked well in terms of keeping the cake in place, but the high walls and my not-tiny hands didn't work well together, lots of clinking ensued and I wonder if I got a lather that was as good as I could've.

Later I bought a low-walled bowl, pretty much as tall as the soap round and slightly wider. It pretty much fits in the palm of my hand (I have big hands, though) and is very comfortable to grip. No clinking and I'm able to get more than a ninety degree angle between brush and soap. Shorter apothecary mugs may serve this purpose just as well.

I agree. Find what you can that can hold soap, and/or lather, and use it. Mug, bowl, scuttle, hollowed out scull, whatever it takes to get you some good lather.
