The good: 32 oz (4 cup), adjustable heat

The bad: It's mostly plastic, with a small warming section in the middle

It looks like it's mostly intended to boil water or heat soup. I think with the plastic sides, the lather would not stay hot enough.

    Oh well, she tried

So how is the size? Does 4 cups look too large?

Ok, finished my first shave with it (at noon... gotta love Saturdays )

Takes a while to get warm. A test run last night revealed that it takes at least 20-25 minutes. My answer to this was to plug it in and turn it on high before I got into the shower. This worked out perfectly.

Since all I have at the moment is some classicshaving.com cake soap, here is the method I used. Please let me note here - I am by all means still an amateur to wet shaving, so there my be lots of room for improvement in technique.

I soaked my brush during the shower, so that it was warm and holding lots of water by the time I was ready to start. Once ready to begin, I pulled the brush out, gave it a shake to drop most of loose water, and drained the ceramic bowl of the crock pot.

I took a small amount of the cake soap ("snurdle" I believe is the term I've seen used on here), and put it into the bottom of the pre-heated ceramic bowl, and used my wet brush to make lather. The lather seemed to be better than I usually get from a cold cake, and the warmth of it on my skin was fantastic. The lather did seem to dry out in the crock quickly between passes, requiring me to rebuild every time I wanted to reapply. I think I am going to try "uberlather" with some glycerin, and see if it improves.

Overall, I am very happy with the new acquisition, and VERY well worth the price.

The manufacturer of the Crock Pot is Chefmate, the part number is SC-15, and I paid $10.99 plus tax. I was unable to find this crock pot anywhere online, save for a few mentions on craigslist and E-Bay.

    Hope this helps!

Unfortunately, I've been unable to find it at my local Target as well (and they don't list it online either).

How was the size? Too large? Too small? Just right?

I'm currently using one of those Mr. Coffee mug warmers with my Tabac ceramic tub as a bowl. It also takes a long time to heat up and it pretty much just heats the bottom of the bowl. I'm using "uber lather" -- load brush with Tabac soap then mix with Proraso cream, 7 - 10 drops glycerin and whatever additional bit of water is required.

As the bowl gets hot on the bottom the lather sort of liquifies down there. So I've got to work it just a bit each time I re-apply. Starts out room temp, middle of the shave it's warm and by the end it's hot.

Not sure but has anyone come across this:

Features and specs on Rival 32041 0.5-Quart Slow Cooker - Crock Pots and Slow Cookers Small Kitchen Appliances - Shopping.com

    Ideas?

It doesnt detail its warming capabilities very well....but it might work and it looks nice, esspecially if some acetone was used to remove the label off or at least not have it facing outwards...

Hmmm. We need someone to test that one. The "keep warm" setting. I read all the reviews on the Rival Little Dipper (which doesn't have any settings) and a lot of people said it burns cheese dip. Sounded like the Little Dipper might be too hot. This one says it has a "keep warm" setting so that might work.

Check the first page, I think someone said that it burns cheese, or something where it gets too hot. Also take note MercV12's is 1.4L (or is it 1.5?) while the dipper is .5

Yes, and the Rival listed above is not the Little Dipper (I don't think...?), although it also appears to be 0.5 qt.

I'm anxiously awaiting MJL's evaluation of the size. Currently I'm using the ceramic bowl that my Tabac came in. I'd estimate that to be about the same capacity as a large coffee mug. It's probably a tiny bit too small. Then again I have a large brush.
