    Default Dirty Bird scuttle

I got my scuttle last week from Julie at Dirty Bird Pottery, and have been using it all week. What a joy to find that my lather is still warm when I relather for my second and third pass! The water reservoir is nice and big, and the bowl is large enough to build your lather in. Julie's workmanship is excellent. I really prefer artisan made pottery that looks handmade to the stuff that looks factory made. If you are looking for an artisan made scuttle, you can't go wrong with this one. You can find her scuttles at www.dirtybirdpottery.com

I have the regular size, one piece model. I spent some time talking to owner/potter Julie about differences etc. Based on my conversation and my preferences, I decided against the two piece, oversized and custom.

Am I pleased with my choice? Absolutely!! I bought a $10 water heater at Target to take water to boiling temperature before loading the scuttle. I preheat it, though Julie says that isnt required.

The scuttle is a great size, though I admit to having used no other and have only my old bowls and soap containers against which to compare. That said, no complaint has surfaced; I've never entertained or had reason to consider any improvements that could or should be made to better suit me. Its deep enough but not so deep as to swallow brush or hand. Its overall mass is large, but fits comfortably on my vanity...no spousal complaints! Its solid...I dont baby it though I suppose it will break if mistreated. Aesthetics? Fine. Plus, its an artisan piece...hand made by a very nice lady who cares about her customers satisfaction.

My Rooney model 3, size two (taller handle than other models) really fits nicely. I also have a Simpson Chubby in the smallest size, a Kent BK4 and a very large Vulfix. All work, but the large brush is a little oversized (I think the knot size is 28-30mm), the Simpson a little short (get more lather on my fingers than with the others).

Sorry about the verbosity....trying to anticipate what considerations you might have when making a selection.

    Best..

I would have bought a Dirty Bird but went with GP instead because of the color choices. I didnt want green or blue...I went with Ivory from GP. Also a nice scuttle if you boil water in a small electric kettle and fill both the resovior and bowl and sink with hot and boiling water...let it all heat up soaking your brush and soap and shower ... then everything stays nice and hot ... almost too hot

Yea, I've had the same inkling. Can't she do other colors?

I got a GP scuttled based on aesthetics as well. I like it alot. The lather bowl size is utterly perfect. It actually converted me, a devout face latherer, to a bowl latherer. I think I have the newest model (G4) as I ordered just a couple weeks ago. It has a ~7oz capacity, as measured by me. I fill the reservoir and bowl with hot tap water while I shower, refill it when I get out, build lather, strop, complete my first pass, and by then, the water inside has really cooled off, causing me to pour out the resevoir and refill it with hot water again. It only takes a second and doesn't really bother me as the lather is always warm for my second pass doing this, but I wanted to mention it anyway. I have tried one of those little candle warmer hot plates and set the whole scuttle on it, and that worked well, but it's kind of a PITA to bring it out everytime, plus it's not water proof at all and is probably a fire hazard to use around so much water. Using it is definitely much more of a PITA than just quickly refilling the reservoir after my first pass.

I don't know how this 7oz GP reservoir capacity would compare with the (claimed) 12oz+ DB one. I would imagine that the 12oz would hold the heat longer, but I'm not sure just how much longer.

I just wanted to throw that out there for anyone comparing the two.
