Thanked: 530Creams can be used in place of soaps, or along with them... It's up to the user... I mostly use creams, and some soaps, and I don't usually mix the two... So, yes, they can be used alone.

Thanked: 530Probably not the best place for this, as it's not a strop thread, but, I have a lot of strops, and I'm rather obsessive compulsive about this stuff
Most days I go Linen (30 laps) then Nylon (40 laps) then Latigo (50 laps) then Horsehide (60 laps)...
However, on weekends I do Linen (30), Polywebbing (40), Nylon (50), followed by Latigo (50), Bridle (50) and Horsehide (60)
(Latigo, Bridle and Horsehide are leathers, Linen, Polywebbing and nylon are fabrics)
And I'm getting other strops soon to play with the rotation even more...
Some people like to experiment with razors, or stones, or soaps and creams... I dig strops. It's my laboratory

Thanked: 530I strop for fun, actually... It's more zen-like for me than honing, or even shaving... I strop while I write papers... It kills time.
Also, it's a great way to break in horsehide... strop while you study, work on papers, watch TV, etc... Just keep stropping
