Hello, Wfaist:
The scuttle failed to maintain consistent warmth and I found myself filling it with hot water several times. Consequently I went from high heat, which broke down the lather, to barely warm — only to repeat the process again. In the end I found the routine not worth the trouble.
I had intended to replace it with a Moss scuttle, but that, too, I decided would not be worth the hassle. I devised my own variation of a scuttle and it worked. What's more, I discovered I preferred my lather just warm enough rather than hot. (I am not referring to cold water shaving here. I had enough of that in Vietnam.) When the heat is kept mild, I found the lather works better.
I also found the scuttle big and clunky.
Currently I rotate about a dozen soaps in various shave mugs. I also rotate three creams. I have a separate pewter mug strictly for making lather. I load the brush with the soap of the day and then make lather in the pre-heated pewter mug. A small terrine filled with hot water keeps the mug and the lather warm enough. With creams, I put a dollop in the pewter mug and create lather.
In the end, what matters is what the shaver prefers. That's how it should be, whether one uses scuttles or not. For me, for now, anyway, I find scuttles not worth the money and the trouble. I like my mugs, some of which are replicas of the old classics.
Regards,
Obie

Would a Thater blow my TGN Grade A silvertip out of the water?

Kyle,
I don't look at brushes in that way; rather, I take each for what it is. I have had TGN brushes, all premium silvertip, and liked them. Of course, I am also quite fond of Thater brushes. Recently I bought a Vie-Long silvertip in the beehive handle and love it. Is that a better brush than my Thaters? I don't know. All I know is that I like them in different ways, because each has its own characteristics and personality. Still, in each shaving life a Thater silvertip must fall.

Thanked: 0I have three Thater brushes. They will easily whip up a good lather even from difficult soaps. The feel on the face is absolute luxury.

What model is the brush in the top photo? I really like the two tone handle. Thanks

Kyle,
Once you have the pleasure of lathering with the Thater silvertip I doubt you will regret your purchase. My preferred Thater brushes are the two-band 4125 series, which come in knot sizes from 22 mm to 30 mm. They are delicious brushes with dense knots, sturdy backbone and silky tips.

I have to agree with Obie here. Thäters are really something else. Of course a $5 boar brush will get you the same lather as a $100 Thäter. How they feel on your face is a completely different matter.
And while the three-band silvertip is very nice indeed, the two band is really where it's at Thäter wise. I pretty much exclusively use a 49125/1 in two band, fan shaped. I couldn't imagine it getting much better, for softness, density or backbone.
