+1 for Target's badger brush!
Went and picked up the Shea Moisture badger shave brush from Target today for $9 Shop Shea Moisture - All-Natural and Organic Skin Care products for Healthy Living / Face and Shave just to see what it would do in comparison to my VDH boar.
Wow! First, the brush is pretty large at about 20mm x 62mm...that's pretty lofty for a brush and my concerns were that it would just flop over and not support itself when it go wet. Wrong. It picked up and generated much more lather than my VDH could hope to create. Yeah, as mentioned by others, it was a bit scratchy, but so was my VDH for the first month or so, so we'll see how the brush ages.
I know that some Target stores carry the brush and others don't but if yours has some, pick one up. Even if you have an expensive brush, pick it up anyway and toss it into your dopp kit....heck, I got one of those today at Target too. Good stuff!
In a related note, I asked one of the assistants where their dual-edge blades could be found and the guy looked at me like I had spoken a different language...lol.

How do they do Badger for that price?... I need to go to Target to get some diapers for the wee-commander-of-my-household-in-chief anyhow... Perhaps I'll grab two.
Odd use for a shaving brush: My toddler hates being soaped up for the bath... but she loves it if I whip a lather up in a coffee cup and use my ancient boar brush to lather her up. Perhaps I'll get her a softer brush for bath-time here. Thanks!

target brush
A lot of brush for the money. Nice size, nice heavy handle. A little soft for face-lathering, my usual method. Did much better working a lather in a scuttle. Lost one hair in 3 lathering sessions, no smell that I could notice. A definite keeper.
Don't get hung up on hanging hairs.

Looks like a bottom feeder. Better than a Van der Hagen, but the loft will give a soft impression. I'll pick one up to try, but anytime you can get a deal that is "to good to be true", it generally is. But is you like it, use it. Once you compare it to a quality brush, you'll understand the difference. Looks like it may be a great travel brush.

Thanked: 11I picked up a generic badger brush at Target about a year ago with a carbon fiber handle. It turns out to be one of my favorites!

We picked one up for the novelty of it and also to evaluate the brush for newbies. While it is not the best brush I have ever used it is a very good brush for the price. The closest brush I have close to that price is a $25 Vulfix. The Vulfix is a little stiffer so face lathering works better than the Shea, as Stimpy points out but I have to say for a starter brush and bowl lathering you can't beat the price. Have I switched over to the Shea brush over My Shavemac or others, no way, but there is a huge price difference between them. Way better than a drug store boar brush, which was my first brush over 20 yrs ago! If you are looking for badger shave brusher on the cheap this is a great entry level brush.

I picked one up a few weeks back for my son's birthday. Nice brush for the money. I still like my Tweezerman, haven't tried any of the expensive brushes.
There are many roads to sharp.

Good catch Red! I have a stainless handled brush that I've used for quite a while but constantly burn the h#$ll out of my hand after I've "cooked" it for a few minutes. Love the hairs on it more than any other I have so I'll suffer the heat - but this one sounds like it may edge the SS handled one out if the badger softens well. I'll have to swing by a Target and check it out!
