Well most of it does stay on the brush but some lather always ends up on the handle maybe I'm just really sloppy?

I leave my brush in the bowl/mug/scuttle when I lather so I have never really had this issue. I will say that unless I make a really wet lather it will stay in place on whatever I smear it on. If you are looking for a "sound" reason to buy a new brush I think you have it!
I shave because I want to, not because I have to!

I agree. I can't recall having that problem before (lather running down the handle).

As for resting between passes, since I prefer bowl lathering I simply place my brush into the lather bowl. But for face latherers (which I assume you're among) putting the brush in the stand will do just fine.

I almost always face lather. Maybe I'll make my lather a little dryer from now on and see what happens but I'm still looking at the Tulip

I bowl or face lather -- depending on the shave soap or cream I use -- and always set the brush on its handle during passes, but I've never had the lather fall down to the handle. It sounds like you're using too much water and getting a wet lather. Or you're getting too much foamy lather on the brush tip, and some of the top-heavy foam falls off.

I notice that when I bowl lather too quickly and end up with excessive lather spilling out of the bowl, some of the lather gets on the brush handle. The handle gets slippery after that. Is that happening to you?

I guess I'm sort of sloppy while I face lather but it doesn't happen when I use a brush with a loft of 50 mm

    Being sloppy at getting messy....

It's funny in a hypocritical kinda way!

    Gentlemen:
I keep my brush in the Moss scuttle to keep it and the lather warm. A cold brush with cold suds isn't my ideal combination for a delicious shave. If by chance, when lathering, the brush handle becomes soapy, I rinse the handle under the faucet with a low stream of water and that does it.
