Well I don't have any really good reasons, but it's getting folks talking and it seemed like a perfectly good idea .

Cool project! Gotta find a troll..not on the net!
I would use a fabric Dye like 'RIT' or similar where available. They also use vinegar as an accelerator. I just died a batch of wool felt black for strop hone renewals and it did a good job.
For keratin, in this case feathers, this is a lot more dye than I used for a couple square feet of felt, but the results should be correspondingly greater.:

I will see how the beetroot goes, but might give the fabric dye a go if it doesn't work. Thanks Richard.

Forgot to mention that some dies leach out and can color soap lather and perhaps other things quite well. Wash the object in mild soapy water and rinse well before using. It may take a few latherings to remove excess dye.
I found some large mascara? brushes that were dyed black and they are great trvel brushes for lathering but...it took a few citrus soap washings to get the dyestuff out. But sable is a great soft lathering brush. They were three ea. for USD $1.50 at a closeout. About 18mm in diameter.

I now have a troll on the way, and as a bonus it's arms are by its sides. I should have all the parts by next Wednesday week or 10 days as the troll is being sent to camp and I am home for a week as of Wednesday.

Right this is the colour after 2 hrs 20 mins. I took it out and gave it a rinse. I have put it back again now, i will leave it until I wake up in 6 or so hours and see how it's looking. Should I let the brush dry with the beetroot liquid on it then rinse next time?Name: 20140928_090353.jpg
