Are there some tell-tale signs of lignum imposters that we can look for?

You have people selling, argintine lignum and verawood on the bay, they call these lignum, but they may not be of the same family.
They are similar in apperance,is only one true lignum.

I also made a set of scales using Lignum Vitae with white acrylic liners and Lignum wedge and a decorative pin instead of a pin and washers.

Found this too: Lignum Vitae | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods)

Also, I found something saying that real lignum has a green tint to it. Sound right?

Yes it has a green tint, but that will change over time.
Brush handle on the rgt is fresh turned, expose it to sunlght it will darken like the one on the left and the pce they are sitting on.
Lignum is 40% oil by wgt,as the oils oxidize the wood darkens, over 100 yrs it will be black.

Thats exactly what mine is Jamie. I took a very old Lawn bowling ball that had a very nice ivory insert. Love that brush not only for the lignum, but the material is very old.

This is saw dust from a fresh cut Lignum Vitae lawn bowl. I left it in the sun for an hour and this is what happened. The oil in the wood oxidised and turned green. I pushed some off the top to show the stuff below, which had not been exposed. Pretty cool it happens so fast.

I've made some pens out of it, and always noticed that it did indeed have a greenish tint.
