Thread: Lignum and Silvertip

It's been a while since I've posted. I'm still making knives, but rarely get time to venture into the shaving arena. Over Christmas, my dad, the guy that taught me how to work with my hands, found a big chunk of lignum vitae (because he knows how much I love it for shaving applications) and gave it to me for christmas. While I was home, I threw a bit on the lathe and turned a new brush.

For your consideration:

The knot is a 28mm Silvertip


I sunk a mosaic pin in the bottom and put my mark on it (though this one is not for sale).

Solid Lignum Vitae shaving brush, Outstanding! It's such a treat to turn, and one of my favourite woods ( because it's so rare.) I have a LV and elephant ivory brush I made for myself and it's my favourite.

You did a fabulous job on it! Enjoy.

An pixel just showed that if you turn lignum at the right speed, with special silver bullet tipped tools, with a little bit of mountain stream water sprinkled on it turns into a nice coors light shape. . No in all seriousness that is a gorgeous brush. 28mm!

Funny how so many of us that turn/make brushes all have a personal one out of Lignum hehehehe

The late Bill Jack who made me a few brushes over the years told me all his brushes and bowls including this set he made were all made from lawn geen bowling balls, and quite a few of the early ones had a nice Ivory disc either end he always raved about how nice the wood was to turn, here's one he made for me a Simpsons Chubby clone including matching bowl a Chubby 1.5 with a two band 24mm knot with a 46mm loft.

Thanks for all the praise guys. Lignum is indeed a joy to turn, really to work with in all applications. I love that you can just sand it to a pretty high grit and take it right to the buffer! I did a run of forge-scale friction folders a while back with lignum scales



Had to take pixel's advice and wipe all the lignum down with acetone before gluing. One of the many pieces of wisdom I've picked up.

This is just a gorgeous set. I love the ivory cap and that classic chubby.

Good observation I love finding stuff that works well for shaving applications. Since hearing pixel rave about lignum long ago, I've kept my eye out for it. I've made a few sets of one piece scales out of it.



A belt grinder and a bandsaw make it pretty quick work
