I don't know what it's like down under, but here, Universities spend a lot of money to attract students. It is a business, after all.

They need to be able to justify the three mortgages they charge you to get your education.

My sentiments exactly. Essentially, Universities and Colleges function no different than the next one (to a point, some are better than others, but they all give a higher education). It's all in how you sell it that allows them to attract new "customers".
I'll give you a little metaphor- do you need a $500 custom or vintage razor to get a good shave? Does it offer anything functionally better than a $100 razor, or for that matter, a $10 one? Nope, not one bit, but you ENJOY the looks and feel of that high priced razor, making it desirable and a rational decision to buy it.
Just my two cents... Now, the COST of said higher education is another story altogether..."Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. That one is Obsession." -Roland Deschain of Gilead

Seriously - at one time someone ranted about how they now had a tv in the commence, and how disturbing that was. After all - Uni is a place to share idea's and have social intercourse, not get away from it all and veg out in front of a tv!
Sure students who are sitting in front of an xBox all day are going to fail out. Doesn't matter if that box is in their room, in the Union, or wherever. Just like kids in the past who sat in front of the tv all day and night failed out.
That said - the stress of finals and/or simply trying to get through the semester is eased with a small distraction now and again. It's healthy! You wouldn't believe how much Hearts I played while conceptualizing papers or tests lol .
We all goof off... how one generation does it compared to past generations is kind of inconsequential.David

Thanked: 1587I dunno - I guess you guys are right and I am just slowly slipping out of touch.
But to be fair to me , I do think if these Xboxs had been put somewhere recreational I think I'd have been fine with it. What gets me is that they are in the "Student Learning Centre". Learning. Unless we've suddenly added a "Halo 4" major to our BSc., it strikes me as massively inappropriate and sending a really bad message to students.
It's hard enough to get them to concentrate in lectures as it is without them associating the learning of content with playing an Xbox.

Thanked: 284Get this - we recently got "Lounges" set up where I work, complete with xbox's and foosball tables. Then immediately the emails come out to say that these are not to be used if you are charging company time, etc. Guess how much use those get now? Like I'm really going to extend my work day so I can play foosball at work.
I have better things to do with my time at work - like browse SRP all dayI love living in the past...
