Default Anyone here quit smoking successfully?

I have an doctor appointment this week to explore quitting smoking. I am going to ask about Chantix(not sure of spelling). I would appreciate advice or experiences from members regarding smoking cessation.

I quit last December. I have been using an electronic cig. It helps with the cravings.

I quit late last winter. I just slowly cut back. It's weird once it's out of your system, I find myself wanting a smoke but then anytime I smell it I'm disgusted by it. Good luck though.

I quit almost 5 years ago. Nobody was a worse cigarette hound than me. I got tired of everything revolving around the cigarette. I never smoked in my house with my kids. I was done with it and didnt have an urge to smoke since. I used to have a few cigars a day for a bit but I may smoke 2-3 cigars a month or less now. ANybody can quit if you want to. Good luck.

Thirteen years ago I woke up in the middle of the night barely able to breathe. Lived six blocks from the emergency room and arrived barely able to talk. Diagnosis was severe case of bronchitis aggravated by smoking. Went home, dumped half a carton of expensive English cigarettes in the sink and wet them down. Haven't smoked since. I truly feel cold turkey is the only way to go. And despite the wants and desires of wanting to light up again in the long run I found it a heck of a lot easier than going thru divorce.

I smoked marlboros for well over 40 years. Started when exiting a mess hall in Army basic training at Fort Polk in Lousiana in 1965. There were suits handing out 4 packs of cigs as the troops left the mess hall. These same guys would sell you a car
or life insurance or could tell you where to pick up a mason jar of moonshine.
It was in 2005 while at my son's house in San Francisco as I waited for a 5:00a.m. atherectomy surgery at a Sequoia Hospital that around midnight I ventured out to my son's backyard for a last cig and then tore up the balance of the pack and tossed it in the trash promising myself not to fail quitting this time. I knew I would be in the Hospital for 3 days and I figured I could go cold turkey with the worst of the cravings during that 3 days. As it turned out it worked and it worked because I had finally made up my mind that I could do it period and perhaps enjoy better health and safe a few $$.
I had tried very half hearted attempts to quit several times in the 6 or so years prior to quitting. I would last about 3 days and sneak just one smoke, just one! I would try again some months later but using nicotine patches and quickly discovered
that I could use the patch and smoke. My son, my wife and my Doctor were hard on my case and I finally decided that I needed to quit for myself. It worked and I have not gone near a cig since 2005. However I have not managed to escape nicotine. After a year and a half off of cigarettes I returned to my 2 or 3 cigar a week pleasure which I continue to this day.
I do enjoy the cigar and the nicotine, have never inhaled, and Cuban tobacco has no additives just tobacco at its finest.
With the cigar smoking I never again felt the urge for a cigarette and remain that way today at 67 years old. I guess I compromised with demon tobacco and obviously rationalized my love of cigars.
I wish you and everyone else who decides to quit cigarettes the very best in succeeding.

i quit a year ago with ciggarets and about 7 months ago with snus/snuff. best way to quit IMO is to just QUIT straight off no fuss. its a mindgame you haf to win. all those stupid "helping" things like gums or electronic cig, just gonna make things take way longer and you will still have the crave for a smoke.

another good thing is instead of thinking "i cant have a cigg" you should think "I dont want a cigg" it worked for me. its gonna be 3-4 weeks in the beginning that will be tuff, after that you will slowly but study see that your cardio gets better, you sens of smell and taste and how stupid smoking is it took me about 12 weeks total to no longer have any intrest in smoking.

under this period i also stop drinking coffe, i had a bad habbit to smoke when i had coffe so the crave for a cigg was mad when ever i had it. so by not drinking coffe under the first weeks helpt me alot.

After smoking Camel "straights" for 24 years (started at age 13, with Lucky Strike "straights"), I quit "cold turkey" at the end of July 1989... that's 24 years. I don't know if those "patches" were around, back then; I just stopped. You can, too.
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

Some of the best advice I ever got related to quitting smoking. No more cartons just packs and change Tupac every time you order get a new different Brand of cigarette. Set a termination date and when that day arrives stop smoking! It was suggested to me that if I drank fresh grapefruit juice it would be easier for me to deal with the withdrawal symptoms. That worked perfectly. It is not easy to quit but the benefits of quitting far away the benefits of smoking. So hang in there and persevere and think positive you can do it if I can do it and I'm a banjo player

Quit while in the Nightclub Biz, started back when I got in the Car Biz because of the boredom, quit again quite some time ago and have never really wanted another..

Have heard it said that it takes about two weeks for the actual physical cravings to be over...

Also just did it cold turkey...
