I have to admit I am not unbiased because I was wowed by my modded GD, and obviously some others are too, and some more others are probably just as biased against them.
The problem with GDs was / is mainly their lousy construction and finish iirc, and not to much the steel.

Which is why we advise(d) against them. They come with a lot of geometry issues. Once those are checked and taken care of and the razor is honed, it'll be a decent shaver, probably. But with that amount of things that need taking care of, it is impossible to say that 'Gold Dollars are decent razors' because we consider GDs to be what leaves the manufacturing plant, and not what it looks like after it has been modded / fixed.

Oh, no argument from me! Fresh out of the box they are basically useless as razors, at least the model 66, anyhow. I thought we were talking about the steel.

For anyone who doesn't want to basically make a razor out of a half finished blank, you SHOULD advise against them, I think. They are not a finished product, just raw material in a convenient and low cost form. It's up to the buyer to make a real razor out of it. You should try doing one. It's actually kinda fun, sort of like a paint-by-numbers velvet Elvis painting... the end result can be something that is pretty cool, and useful too.

Haha. No thanks. I already see finishing razors as a necessary evil. I really like forging and heat treating and even the rough grinding. But finishing is I do to be able to sell them, not because I like it that much
