I was not disagreeing with you at all.
Here in MN I think that you need at a minimum $20/hr for a 40 hour a week job to begin to support a family.
That would be a little less than double of the Washington state minimum wage.
A young couple that I know is moving back here from Washington state because they want to buy a house and with no kids and both of them working they cannot afford it.

Roy, I have done the same as you said in a previous post. Was at Home Depot standing in line, all the cashiers were busy and yet the female supervisor standing there watching told me that I could use the self checkout. Told her the same thing you told the other and got the same response. If they don't need to serve me, they don't need my money. They are simply being cheap.
I don't know about elsewhere in the country, but around here at 15$ an hour you would be barely above starving, the slightest bump in the road of life would wipe you out. Think about it, what does a set of even cheap tires cost these days. A trip to the garage is going to cost at least 100$, thats just to have them pop the hood and say "Hmmm", and then theres the bill, 300$ minimum. Thats a weeks pay these days for the average Joe.Last edited by nun2sharp; 01-29-2018 at 02:25 AM.

What's sad is that the 'Minimum Wage' was 'Supposed' to be a way to get your foot in the door, learn a trade or business and then be able to climb up the financial ladder and be successful.
However today's business's don't see it that way. They will take a huge amount of employee turnover by hiring for minimum wage and then not even give the new employee close to 40 hours.
Even after all those years at Safeway I was still considered a 'Part Time Employee' and I had to fight to get even close to 40 hours.
The store I was working at when I had had enough is clear across town so I don't get there very often as other stores that are part of the chain are close by however I also needed to do some business at another store very close by so I did my shopping there. It had been about two months since I was in my old store and during my shopping I recognized more CUSTOMERS than I did EMPLOYEES!!
I spoke with a couple of the more senior employees that had been there before I retired about the situation and they all said basically the same thing: The turnaround was awful! They would get a newbie semi trained and then they'd get tired of the BS and leave.
God am I glad I left when I did! I told my kids about my decision to retire and told them that I'd rather die broke and in the streets than to die at Safeway busting my ass for a company that didn't care if I lived or died as they could simply replace me with 2 or 3 minimum wage workers that they didn't have to pay them Journeyman wages, Retirement, Eye Care Insurance, Dental Insurance etc.
Sorry about the rant, but I do feel better--time for a beer! Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 3795Good for you for being able to retire!
I would have "retired" into a cabin in the woods by now if I weren't married to someone I like. She's not the cabin or woods or outdoor type and she seems to have more expensive needs than me, so I'll be working for probably another ten years if my hands and mind hold out that long.

As some know, I'm a lightweight when it comes to the cold. I'm an August Baby and I'd gladly rather sweat then freeze.
Several years ago I was helping convert all four Safeways in Yakima WA over to the new 'Lifestyles' decor, services and products. One of the Assistant Managers had been an assistant manager at my home store and we were friends. Anyway it was winter and he'd have me over every Wednesday for supper with him, his lovely bride and their child. 90% of the time he'd be outside BBQing.
Let me give you a quick bit of info about the weather at the time--There were Ice Flows in the Yakima River!!
Anyway, he'd be all bundled up including gloves and even smoking a cigerette and then bring the fixings inside and we'd eat.
I stumbled upon this in today's newspaper and I couldn't help but think of him.
I hope all will enjoy!

Thanked: 3795My wife has all kinds of food allergies, intolerances, whims, and quirks. About ten years ago she was eating pretty much nothing but chicken, carrots, and peppers. All three had to be grilled. I had to grill every four days. Even in the middle of winter, I was grilling. Worked till midnight? Oh well, fire up the grill. Twenty below zero outside? Oh well, fire up the grill. Worked until midnight AND twenty below zero? Yup, fired up the grill!
Oh, and I too would much rather be hot than cold. I grew up on a farm and spent a lot of time in both. As a kid, my goal was to grow up to have a job in which I did not have to be hot or cold. In that one simple regard, I'm a success!Last edited by Utopian; 02-01-2018 at 09:45 PM.

Ron, you are a Very Good Husband! :
My friend didn't have those circumstances he just loved to BBQ! While he was at my store we had a Safety Celebration and the Store Manager was going to BBQ Steaks and Chicken for the crew from noon to about 6pm. He was also going to provide potato salad and other side dishes. So my friend offered to bring his charcoal BBQ unit in. The store manager ruined it by putting in WAYYYYY MORRRREE charcoal than it was intended to use and warped the hell out of it.
My friend said he just told the boss that next time the boss could provide the BBQ unit. My friend then went out and purchased a new unit and tossed the old as he said that there was nothing salvageable. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.
