We have had some great weather the last few days, and this weekend is going to be nice too. Here is a little deal/situation I'm doing/ did 3 days ago...

About a year ago my stepson (32yrs) got a 05 chevy equinox given to him by his grandmother. He replaced the water pump with my direction and all was good. Two days ago he said it overheats and has no heater. I drive a 08 Nissan Altima Coupe and only drive 12 miles to work where he drives 110 miles to work. I told him that the blue book value on my car is about 4k but I could sell it for more because of the used market right now. And with the fact that I don't need a car for the next 5 months (according to the doctors), let's trade. So he gave me the equinox (146k miles, worth 2k on kbb) plus the 4k cash (in payments) for my Nissan.

It took me 5 hours just to clean the grime, gunk, and trash from the equinox before id think of driving it. Found a little Coke spoon under the seat too that I'm not going to bring up to him or his mother. Dumb-ass. The struts and shocks are shot, trim missing, door panel falling off, a quarter glass shattered. The overheating issue was a simple fix. Bleed the system as he didn't get all the air out. Dumb-ass again. I warned him about that when we replaced the water pump. He is really happy with my cool Nissan. I know he will trash it soon or demolish the trans being a dumbass but that's on him. I warned him!

I sat up late last night and ordered 800 bucks worth of parts that need replacing or were just torn off (damn kid). Today I'm going to shampoo the hell out of the interior as it's covered in gunk and stains and smells bad. In the end, this gives him a nice little car to drive that is in great condition and me a project to do (being I'm one-handed. One-armed still from surgery, and off work for a few months). I can take my time doing it and will make him help when I need it. I will drive this one to work for a couple of years and then sell it. It won't be worth anything by then but it will drive, be clean and everything will work so what the hell. He gets a nice little car to zoom around in, for now, and I get a little project to spend time on.
You're a good man Jerry! That's so much more than I would have done!

    Thanks, guys.
So I did get the carpets and seats shampooed today. I was afraid I was going to have to put seat covers on the list but 90% of the mess came out. Good enough for me for non-leather seats. Only a couple of stains won't come out. I hate seat covers as they never look good in my opinion. I took out the cabin air filter. It looked like the original. greasy and dirty. It had leaves and dead bugs in it. I got it and the engine air filter changed. Changed the oil and filter. Ordered a few more parts. The exterior doesn't look too bad except it will need a couple of pieces of glass replaced. I can see I may be in as much as 1100 in parts before I'm done.

One part I just can't seem to find is the seal that rubs against the outer door glass. It's very odd-shaped. A small part of it is attached to the exterior of the door, then it goes down inside the door about 3/4 inches then back up to rub against the glass to keep out wind and rain. On both front doors, these seals are shredded and fall inside the doors. So if you are any good at finding parts I could use the help. The dealer wants 120 each for them but I bet they don't even have them. That is just what I found online. I found aftermarket stuff but every time I put in the specs for the car it says It won't work for a 2005 Chevy EQUINOX LS.

    Anyway, The fun continues.

Id make up a thread like Mike but this isn't near as exciting as rebuilding an entire car. lol.
    It's just Sharpening, right?

I definately think you should start a thread about bringing your Chevy Equinox back to life Jerry.

It might not be the huge exciting rebuild from the ground up that Mike is doing but that Chevy fixer upper is more in the wheelhouse of probably quite a few of us mere mortals. It's something I would take on and actually know where to start.

Thanks for your opinion Steve, but the worst part that would show the biggest change is done already. But, I guess I could still do it. Its not like I dont have the time. Lol.

    I’m with Steve.
Any rebuild deserves its own thread in the conversation sub thread, if complicated enough.
Others can learn from you along the way, and if you forget steps, go back a few pages to remind yourself what you were doing!
In most ways new cars are harder to work on, and more relevant to the current audiences than my old albatross project is anyway.

You should have kept the coke spoon as leverage, grow up, or explain it to mom...

The coke spoon story triggered a memory. I worked with a naive young, quite religious, but not very worldly fellow who was listening in on a staff room conversation about how a coworker knew someone was a coke user because of the length of his fingernail. The young fellow expressed his astonishment that coke cause fingernail growth.

Either I'm also niave or I just don't get it.

Does coke make yor fingernails grow?

I assume we're not talking about cans of coke. I don't have much knowledge about drugs, exept for a bit of mary jane when I was in my very early 20's but thats legal in Canada now so it doesn't really count.

Naivete is a good thing. Being a young adult in Florida in the 1980s you wouldn't believe the heartache and ruined lives I've seen because of the weasel dust. I knew so many sweet young girls I'd grown up with turned into whores for it. People of both gender who wound up in prison before their lives even really got started. One guy trying to buy on the street had someone pistol whip and try to rob him. He wound up stabbing the guy in the heart and killing him. Another guy I knew got in debt to some dealers and ended up hacked into peices and left in a duffle bag on his father's lawn.
I wish I had never heard of it.
