Anything could be a poison at a certain dose. [I wonder how much of Nightblade's Gumbo it would take? 10 gallons?]

Excellent question, we're actually trying to find out more about that! I don't know how far back the common ancestor goes, but it's true that e.g. snakes by a lake have poison adapted for fish, whilst others have poison adapted for birds.
The mutations occur mostly at specific sites, active sites, of the poisonous proteins. The rest of the protein may serve different functions, such as preventing rapid breakdown and keeping the right structure.
As far as anything being a poison, I've heard of a guy dying of 8 litres of tap water. The snake poisons take about 3 mg.
