Making more laws against drugs, alcohol, murder, Ivory, ect..... may not solve the problem but having no laws is clearly not the answer either. What is the answer? Hell, if only it were that easy I wouldn't have lost two brothers, there would be more elephants on the planet, and everyone would show up to work on Monday mornings. Only thing I can say is it begins with education and ends with communication. Will these laws (or any laws) stop the problem? Nope but its an attempt and I applaud that. Besides- I am the problem. Not you or her or him or the laws or the poachers or china. Its me (shhh don't tell my wife that). So I need to fix me and that means, as others here have said, that I can only control my own personal choice. I choose not to buy Ivory. Law or no law.

I have ...several... Ivory items. I don't feel guilty for owning them, they were made for someone else long ago. Would never want a part of modern poaching. Sad I cannot sell them in the future.
I guess that is as good an excuse for being buried with them as any! Wait till they dig me up someday! They will think I am a King!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Clearly this is a divisive issue and as with most of these things people will not change their opinion.
However I do believe that this is a generational thing as new generations of people come through, so do different opinions on what is acceptable. I think that the possession or use of Ivory will be something that will be viewed negatively, indeed it is already an anachronism and that these laws will assist in that perception.

Speaking of ivory, I have a customer at the barber shop that said he would bring me some slabs of pre ban, he said he has like 30 slabs he got from a closed down shoe factory, they used ivory to work the leather somehow. Hope he remembers next time he needs a hair cut!

I have hunted and fished and did not then and do not now find anything wrong with these activities. I'd just like to bring a little attention to the majestic creature that we call the elephant. The more you learn about them the more you are humbled by their complex social organization, the care for their young, the shear beauty of this species. Seriously the planet needs more elephants not more people and certainly not more trinkets for jaded humans. This might sound slightly controversial but I would like to see the humans cleared out of all elephant habitat entirely. That's right, just erase the artificial lines that the Europeans drew on the Dark Continent that they call countries, move 'em out and call the new place an word that translates into home of the Elephant. Yes ivory is amazing and I have spent hours looking at collections of ivory art objects. I have such a respect for these animals that I think an organized hunt for poachers might be a good idea. Give them a chance and make the weapon a double rifle in .404 Jeffery, or some other such Nitro Express. And oddly, I think those double rifles are one of the most beautiful long guns ever made.
