looking bad here in the states.
not looking forward to the future.
Agreed ^ hopefully this doesn't become the zombie apocalypse can't help but to think it's purposefully orchestrated by our government. Pray for the thousands of troops going to Africa.
Well, if you were around in the 1950s and went thru the polio program, this ebola stuff scares me.
Unless we are talking of yet another, the flight was to Cleveland. She was asymptomatic until she returned home. The current outbreak in West Africa has been ongoing since March. In countries with what the Washington Post described as "broken health care" infrastructure. IIRC there have been approximately 7,000 reported cases and half have died ...... in an area inhabited by millions of people.
So don't get me wrong, it scares me too, but I don't think we are in for a situation like the bubonic plague of the middle ages. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/16/he...-hysteria.html
No joke, buy stock in the local UHaul locations in the Dallas area.... I will be relocating to Montana soon. Looking for property now.
Well, you are not alone Europe’s Hidden Ebola Cases - The Daily Beast . The WHO seems to have fumbled this Ebola outbreak right from the start too.
Bob
They better figure it out because their is only about 16 or 17 beds among 4 hospitals that can handle this situation in all of the united states. Laziness is half the reason its happening. The woman should have never got on an airplane but people are so selfish in this country that this woman thought her trip to Ohio is more important than all of this country. Piss poor leadership in this country.
A mandatory vaccine in your future ? If the media helps it along, yes. Somebody could make some serious change of this so watch for that. Nobody makes mistakes like this when there is a chance to make money.
About 10 years ago when I was still on the job, an employee of a popular magazine company called and reported a suspicious package had arrived & they wanted the police to respond. The person who received the call was new & I was sent to the complaintant, my questions as to the nature of the suspicious package, while in route, went unanswered.
I arrived & went to the 3rd floor of the building, where a lady approached me with an open postal package, I stopped her a few feet away & asked what's inside. She tilted the box to show me it contained white powder & a note that read, "This is Anthrax and all you B&#$*(^%'s are going to die." The lady had already showed the contents to the entire floor. I sealed the entry & exit points of the 3rd floor & waited for a Hazmat Unit to arrive. We were herded onto a recycled school bus, taken to a large hospital parking lot, made to exit the bus & strip of everything, put all belongings into large bags,,, walked naked in a line to be hosed & scrubbed by people in chemical suits,, then herded naked into a large room, where we were handed hospital gowns. We stayed in the room for several hours.
The powder turned out to be harmless,,,, all my equipment & clothes were destroyed anyway, my gun sonic cleaned.
I didn't hate the ass&ole who sent the package, I was pi$$ed at the system that failed me & my overall lack of training in this area. I had been trained to handle robbers, killers & lost children,,, not death in a box. Re-Training on Bio-hazards started immediately.
The only upside was that the magazine was working a story on the South Beach modeling industry. There were at least 15 models with me,,, I only wished that I had been keeping up with my workouts & had some of my hair left. I arrived home in a hospital gown & not a single phone number. :(
I really try not to be paranoid about this stuff but the powers that be seem to really be dropping the ball on this one.
I told my wife you will be able to pick out the straight razor guys in the apocalyptic world b/c they will still have nice clean shaven faces long after everyone else has ran out of blades.
Remember guys....luck favors the prepared.
I'm sure that this will somehow be linked to Bush and/or global warming. It is election time after all.
I work in a hospital and the other day I got a call about a loose toilet seat in the emergency department. As I bent over to tighten it the chest of my uniform touched the seat. Who knows whos sweaty rear touched it???? I am glad that feces etc. is not considered hazardous waste!:D
""You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before." ~Rham Emanuel.
What about all the unscreened immigrants illegally crossing the border? Why are the doctors and nurses near the border told to stay quiet about diseases encountered in the illegal immigrant population or go to jail?
Heard anything about Benghazi in the news lately? I can think of several other issues left simmering in the back ground.
Why would the rest of the world be prepared to deal with Ebola to any great extent on their own turf? Since it's discovery in 1976 it has only broken out in Africa and the outbreaks were small and of a short duration. Just did not seem pressing enough I guess.
Why is there not any sort of effective vaccine to fight this deadly disease stock piled and ready to go? My guess is that it was a low priority because it only occurred in Africa and although deadly did not kill large numbers of people so there really was no profit in it especially as the people effected by it likely could not afford to buy the vaccine even if there was one. Seems to be a rush on it now though.
The rest of the world is just unprepared to deal with such a large outbreak of Ebola the likes of which has not been seen before. Ever wonder if Ebola has mutated in order for it to spread quicker than it has been known to in the past? Can of worms for sure.

What bothers me the most was the interview Tuesday with Dr. Thomas Frieden, the head of CDC. He had no good answers & expressed concern how flight restrictions might effect the economy of the nations that are ground zero for this problem. He should only be concerned about fighting the virus itsself, not the politics invovled.
I don't think that Mr. Ebola gives a damn whether you are Democrat, Republican, Liberian, American, English or a pygmy from New Guinea. This Ebola problem just demonstrated how little we (Humans) control mother nature. I keep hearing the "experts" brag about our (American) medical system being such a high level about the systems in the ground zero countries,, Really ????. Didn't Dallas have to ship a patient out to another hostpital? ,,, and there are less than 3 cases there,,,,,, if we had only a hundred active cases, it appears we have no facilities to treat them all.
This can be blamed on administrations that go back decades. The papers like to note that the Flu kills 30,000 a year in America, so what's the big scare,,, Really???? Unless your one of the 30,000, I guess its not a problem.
The worst is this yahoo government of ours wants to call up the national guard to go "fight the issue". What exactly will they be fighting? Dumbest thing I have ever heard. I hope they all refuse to go.
I am a bit more worried about the unseen, baggage handlers etc. They get to pick up the hot sweaty luggage of most anyone. who is checking them out?
~Richard
I read this book back in the '90s, and IIRC the author said that the reason ebola was not an issue was that it was isolated in the backwaters of deepest darkest Africa, and by the time the patient exhibited symptoms they would die too quickly to get out of Dodge.
Obviously things have changed. As far as any government response ....... I think of a special I saw on Nova, IIRC, about the possible consequences that New Orleans would face if they suffered a direct hit by a bad hurricane. That was in the 1980s because I was still married.
We all know what happened when the fatal day came. The hell of it is, New Orleans is still vulnerable to the next one that will someday inevitably come down the pike. We are all playing CYA, from the guy in the White House on down, and not doing a very good job of it. This is proven when the omelet eventually hits the fan time and again.
I saw that interview - I was a little shocked when he expressed fighting the virus vs the GDP! It wasn't something I expected but quickly found his statement refreshing because when it all comes down to it, your life, my life, all of our lives have a dollar figures assigned to it.
Back in the day (not sure if they still do this now with Obama care or if it even matters anymore), all you would have to do was look at your health insurance policy to see where your lifetime cap was -> that was the sum value of your life as dictated by some jackass in a cubicle someplace.
Obama care or not - your value is still weighed in terms of economic loss.
Life is not priceless to those tasked to saving it - its harsh, but its true. :( It was nice for the dude to actually point that out.
I think with an open country like the US (and to a lesser degree other countries like Australia) it is unrealistic to think the Government can be completely on top of something like Ebola especially when, as people have pointed out, there are many avenues for it to be introduced.
Having said that, Government policies sometimes do make me wonder. I was listening to an interview on the radio with a representative of our CDC here and she said we've had an ebola (et al) policy for 20 years, part of which is to isolate infected people at their head centre in Westmead hospital.
Westmead hospital is in the middle of the highest and most densely populated city in Australia - Sydney. I'd have thought a head centre in the middle of the outback would be a better option personally.
James.
Not sure I can ride with this, David. I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, but your background is economics?
If this is so, then I understand from what position you made the two statements that I highlighted. That man's (Dr. Thomas Frieden) position is not one that determines GDP. He is supposed to be the top authority on contagious disease control. The Administration has people selected to watch the dollars & cents. The problem with this man is, he is hoping for a favorable winds to push him to a more lucrative position in the future. He has sold out his responsibility to us all,,,,, that was evident in his answers,,, that is why pundants from both sides of the table are shocked at that interview.
Life is priceless, from the smallest of animals , to the poorest of humans,,,, it's just that in many cases we can't save them all. A man's ability to contribute, has never put him in the front of the food line, in my book. I wasn't the head of CDC, but like thousands in my profession, I was tasked with saving lives, if I could. I never thought about their financial status.
Here's a hypothetical for you David & don't take this the wrong way;
You see a car go into the canal, you decide to enter the water, the cars holds a father & a daughter,,, who do you take first; because you probably won't be able to return in time to save the other one?
I already know what your answer will be David. You will save the daughter. Why, because life is priceless & she still has some living to do.
Honest this is not a photoshopped image it was snagged from the video playing on just about every station possible from earlier today, this is the second Nurse (in the Yellow) being flown to Emory Hospital...
Things that make ya go Hmmmmmmmm

I think that single pic pretty much says way more then the standard 1000 words
I think at an individual level people act that way Hirlau. But at the collective level and particularly government, we are all just pawns in their game of macroeconomic chess.
Health, road deaths, unemployment - to policy makers running a country we are all just elements of an equation. Hopefully that equation involves the greatest good for the greatest number, but it's still just an equation.
James.
Government is composed of individuals,,,,,James,,,, sadly, some of those individuals abandon their common core principles to their human faults.
Positions of power & trust seem to attract many of these misguided individuals. It is important that we never get tired & give up our responsibility to hold them accountable.
They are inept at everything else and can't keep a lid on national secrets, but somehow they manage to pull off a planned global pandemic whilst keeping it carefully controlled at the same time, AND noone is spilling the beans, AND the governments of other nations who otherwise can't stand each other are operating in flawless lockstep with each other.
Yeah ... :)
I really don't understand why they are still flying to the infected countries. That is just begging for ebola to jump continents. First thing should have been to stop all air trafic other than carefully controlled flight (flying TO those countries) bringing in supplies etc.
I agree with everything you say except that he's sold out and already looking for a bigger position and hence, is ignoring his mandate. I mean you might be right - I don't know his story.
I kind of took it as he knew what he was up against and wasn't beating around the bush when he expressed the pushback he knew would come if he tried to do his job. Doctors aren't exactly politicians.
Having said that though... you are right. That probably shouldn't be a part of the equation. But even a mechanic talks about the quote before working on the car lol. It's too bad really.
I've always said since I was probably 18 years old the biggest threat to humans will come from the unseen world of microbes.
We make the same fatal mistake humans have made since the industrial revolution namely too much faith in our technology and the ability to control our destiny.
I wonder what took the crooks and conspiracy goons and anti government people so long to take advantage of the issue. The media just keeps pushing the story to try and really panic the population.
In the end there is no cure for this disease so it will just run it's course. This is just one of many such diseases out there ready to pounce.
Obviously a terrible disease, and I don't believe any conspiracy theories at all. Our border security is very lax at the moment, no doubt that will change once the first case arrives here. I have heard they have had good results taking anti bodies from survivors to give to patients. This is probably only the first of many problems of this nature that we may have to face in the future, or more to the point, our children and grandchildren. Antibiotics are failing to combat diseases because of resilience and mutation. This may sound a bit coarse, but maybe it is mother nature's way of saying enough.
The cruel reality is that we will probably develop vaccines quickly, now that the western world is being threatened. We (the west) don't generally give a fig if Africans drop dead by the thousands every day, as long as they do it in their own country and maintain the flow of minerals and ores to our factories so that we can have our iPads. Ebola only became a hot button issue when it crossed borders. If that hadn't happened, noone would be interested in ebola research or mass production because a handful of dead white people are far more important than a couple thousand black people far away.
And not until we have our first modern global pandemic will the governments accept that the economic impact of a pandemic is worse than the impact of restricting air travel. If Ebola had been airborne and just a little bit more contagious, by now we'd have had a pandemic at the scale of the Spanish flu.
I am just waiting on the terrorists and others that love us Western countries so much to have the light bulb go off......."""Ebola, as a weapon of mass destruction, brilliant!!".
Also, if you look back through time, mother nature always has had the upper hand in dealing with population control. She reminds me of my ex-wife, nasty, cruel, and a heartless b**ch.
