Any distraction that helps you control the muscle involved will work. I have never hiccuped more than twice since I learned this.

I told my wife once ( just invented it) " put your thumb in your mouth and pretend you blowing up a balloon till your face turns red. Worked for several months. One day she was telling a friend to do it and I started laughing. Admitted I made it up and it never worked for her again.

Like a lot of things people have yet to discover, You can use your mind a lot more than you think. It just takes practice and the faith that you can do it.
