    It's came down to who will give more of the taxpayers money to those who don't pay, so how do you get elected if you want to balance a budget in today's political scene, I've stayed away from this thread on purpose, but now I feel I want to say, if you feel the last 7 years have been the right way to run things then heaven help us all. I will vote and my vote will not matter, we as a nation have become complacent and allowed out politicians to decide what's best for us. The only problem is what's best for us right now will not make the ones getting the benefits that are breaking the government bank happy. So what to do? You tell me, our deficient is 4-3 times what it was 7 years ago, and predicted to go even higher. Bankruptcy will be the next presidents cross to bear, even though he didn't create it, so maybe a business man who knows how to bring companies out of trouble . Ok rant over ,please everyone on the left, remember I have a right to my opinion, I paid for it. Tc

    I can't wait for the Voting to start

    Then I can't wait for all the scrambling from everyone on this thread, the internet, Cable TV, to the MSM, to explain how they got it right...

    I really can't wait for the Voting to end

    A little research in Wiki, the end all be all in accurate info says that the following quote which I've heard many times hasn't been attributable to any one person or has been misattributed to certain people. Either way it speaks to what you're saying, Tc:

    "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy."

    I find this interesting as well:

    "The historical cycle seems to be: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to apathy, from apathy to dependency; and from dependency back to bondage once more."

    Another quote, one of my favorites, that has been attributed to various folks ......... Winston Churchill is who I'll give it to ........;

    "If you're not a liberal when you're young you have no heart. If you're not a conservative when you're old you have no brains."
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Yeah, according to Socrates "true knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing". Interestingly, another one "there is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance” is much less quoted.
    My personal favorite, though is "I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think."

    The Tytler Cycle: is what it is most often referred to, but you are right it might not actually be his alone

    I always liked Thatcher also

    Margaret Thatcher once said that "The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

    I think it was Dorothy Parker, when asked to define Horticulture, who said - "You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think".

    Quote from Roman historian Titus Livius ("Livy"):

    “The study of history is the best medicine for a sick mind; for in history you have a record of the infinite variety of human experience plainly set out for all to see: and in that record you can find for yourself and your country both examples and warnings: fine things to take as models, base things, rotten through and through, to avoid.”

    I like that one too because it says to me "young" and "old" are a state of mind, not a numerical value. Good to see I am still young!!
